Vera’s tears fell for both of them as she placed her hands on his broad shoulders. “I can forgive you for loving me too much, Elyes Mort. But I can’t forgive you for being a coward.” She turned her back to him, shutting the door on any more of his excuses.
With leaden legs, Vera walked back to where she sensed Ivos stood and let him help her onto the drop ship. Elyes watched as the door propelled upwards and closed, blue flames shooting from the exhausts of the craft. And he watched in apprehension as the spaceship rose higher and higher before shooting forward, disappearing into the shimmering desert air.
It was with a heavy heart that Elyes Mort mounted his hover-bike and began the arduous journey back to his now empty home. He had barely driven a few miles before he impulsively swerved his hover-bike around and went speeding after the drop ship.
“Vera! VERA!” Elyes screamed. She was right, I am a coward for letting her go.
He brought the hover-bike to a sharp stop, leaped frantically off and began jogging over the sand dunes that rose and fell across the expanse. He reached the edge of a low cliff and was blown back by a sharp gust of wind and sand raining down on him. He lay on his back for a good minute, coughing and sputtering, sand in his eyes, feeling completely destroyed, losing another person that he loved.
“Elyes…”
He blinked the sand out of his eyes, cursing the fact he’d left his goggles behind. The sun was hitting him smack in the face, stinging and impeding his vision. When he finally got to his feet, he was startled to see Vera standing in front of him, a small smile playing on her lovely mouth.
“Ivos, what the hell?!” Elyes couldn’t resist yelling indignantly.
To his annoyance, Ivos didn’t look one bit guilty standing a few paces away. On the contrary, he shrugged and laughed raucously. “I’m sorry, but your woman has more balls than I expected! Now stop being a pussy and take her back home already!” he advised.
Elyes blinked dumbly at Ivos before staring back at Vera. “I…I’m sorry for chasing you away. But I came back for you!” he added as a defence.
“I know,” Vera murmured before wrapping her arms around Elyes’ big frame. “I told Ivos to turn the ship around because I had to do the same.”
The tears finally escaped from Elyes’ eyes as he hugged Vera tightly and thankfully cried into her shoulder. “Oh, Vera. Please don’t ever leave me. I promise I’ll be a better man for you.”
“You’re already a better man for me, Elyes.” Vera pulled back for a moment, smiling radiantly. She reached up to touch his face lightly.
Elyes sighed with intense relief and kissed every inch of her face. To her chagrin, he suddenly let go and prostrated himself on his knees in front of her, hugging her tightly around her stomach and hips. He felt blind and uncomfortable and over-exposed, but also somehow liberated from all of his previous agony in that moment.
“Whatever you want and need from me, it’s yours. I belong only to you now, Vera,” he whispered against the silky skin of her midriff.
More tears fell from Vera’s eyes and with some difficulty, she managed to drop down to her knees as well, tipping Elyes’ brow-beaten face up to look at her. “I guess that makes you my pet now,” she whispered with a teasing smirk.
Elyes laughed heartily at this as Vera draped her arms possessively around his neck and kissed him sweetly, deeply. Neither wanted it to end.
Ivos watched this nauseating display of public affection with a wry grin on his face. “Wait till I tell the boys at The Pluto Inn that Plutarch’s most dangerous thug has been tamed by a woman. They’ll have to see it to believe it.”
