First Moon (The Koto Chronicles, #1) Page 21

“I think we all need to be careful,” I said. Thane reached for my hand, and I didn’t pull away.

The twins sank back onto the sofa. For once, they weren’t joking around; they were watching me with serious, sorrowful expressions on their faces.

“From now on, I don’t want either of you in those woods alone,” Thane said. “No more taking baths in the lake, and no more playing tag, at least until they catch whoever did it.”

I had a gut feeling that, just like Vinny’s death, the killer wouldn’t be caught so easily.

“What about when we have to go to our pack meetings?” Hunter asked.

“Then we’ll go together,” I replied.

We had a pack meeting that night, which I was already dreading going to. I didn’t want to be there—I wanted to mourn—but I had no other choice. Johnny would be pissed if I tried to get out of it.

That wasn’t the only reason I was dreading it, though. My distrust for those pack members had only increased over the past few hours.

I hadn’t known Amanda for that long, but she had been a great friend to me during the short time that I had known her. I owed it to her to find out who had killed her. And, even though I hadn’t known Vinny before he died, I couldn’t help but feel like I owed it to him, too. I had the feeling that their deaths were somehow linked, especially now that I knew the two of them had dated at one point.

Thane’s eyes flickered to mine as he nodded his agreement. Was he telling me he would help me find their killer? He nodded again. To everyone, he said, “I think we should all be even more suspicious of our new pack members,” he said. “I don’t think that any one of us should be alone with one of them, either.”

Before I got the chance to say anything else, my cell phone vibrated.

I jumped to grab it from the coffee table, hoping it was Akar. We hadn’t been able to get a hold of him all night.

It was a text message…from Amanda. I glanced at Thane, confused. “It’s from Amanda,” I told the twins.

“Oh, good, maybe she’s still alive,” Chance said hopefully.

“They found her body,” Hunter told him, shaking his head.

“I forgot that part,” Chance told us, a sad look crossing over his face again, as the four of us huddled around my phone.

Hey bitch! I’m so sorry I left early last night. Let’s do it again soon, K? Love ya!

We stared at each other with horrified looks. Whoever had murdered Amanda still had her phone—and they had no idea we’d found her body.
