She poured herself a cup of coffee and booted up her computer. She was going to pretend like nothing happened and continue doing her work like always. She heard her coworkers trickle in. None of them seemed aware of what had happened to her the day before. As a matter of fact, none of them seemed to be aware of her at all. She sighed in relief. She continued to immerse herself in work.

At nine, the phone rang. It was Janice.

“Lila, Mr. Olberman has asked to speak to you immediately.”

“I’ll be right there,” Lila said, resolutely, and hung up the phone.

She took a deep breath and gathered her nerves. She knew that she would have to face him sooner or later. She just wished it would be never. She walked up the stairs rather than using the elevator just to prolong the time when she had to face him. She walked into the foyer of his office and Janice looked up from what she was working on. The pretty secretary smiled at her.

“He’s waiting for you Lila. Go on in.”

“Thanks.” Lila tried to smile back, feeling her knees wobble.

She went on in, despite her wobbly knees and closed the door behind her.

“Lila,” Carl said as he got up from his desk. “I’m glad you’re here.”

He came towards her and she stiffened. She tried to force herself to relax. She knew that he wasn’t going to beat her. She wondered why she had such a reaction to a simple hug.

Lila took a deep breath. “Mr. Olberman, I need to apologize for running out of here yesterday,” she began. “It was a childish reaction and I’m sorry.”

“No, no,” he said, backing up some, sensing her need for space. “I am the one that needs to apologize. I went a little too fast a little too soon. I was just thrilled that we had such a good time at lunch. And then I saw you with that girl and got excited. But I overstepped my bounds and I’m the one who’s sorry.”

Lila looked at him critically. His eyes said that he was sincere. She had to believe him. Didn’t she owe him that much?

“It’s ok, Mr. Olberman. I should not have reacted the way that I did. I am not sure what came over me.”

“Lila,” he said, touching her on the shoulder. “Please call me Carl. It seems to me after the story that you shared yesterday that you have had a bit of trauma in your life. Who knows what kind of life you led before.”

Lila swallowed deeply and took a deep breath. “I know, I wish I could remember more. I just know that I haven’t been close to anybody as long as I can remember.”

He looked at her. “Would you consider letting me make it up to you? Can I perhaps take you out to dinner Friday night?”

Lila hesitated. She wasn’t sure if she could go. Part of her wanted to, but the other part held her back.

“Please,” he continued. “I promise to be a perfect gentleman.”

She relented. “Ok. But I take my own car and meet you there.”

“I can understand that,” Carl said.

They made plans for the time and place. Carl was behaving himself and grinning like a little boy on Christmas morning. Lila couldn’t help but smile back. Despite her huge apprehension, she really was looking forward to going out.

“Would it be ok if I gave you a hug?” he asked.

“Of course,” she said and they embraced.

Instantly Lila felt a warmth that she hadn’t felt in such a long time. She had forgotten how wonderful being held felt. She sighed contentedly, trying to remember the last time anyone had held her this way. The answer didn’t come to her. All she remembered was a squeezing hold to keep her from fighting back.

“I will see you Friday night,” Carl said. “Well I am sure I will see you before then, but you know what I mean.”

“Haha, yeah I gotcha. Thank you Carl.”

Lila turned, feeling as if she was floating on cloud nine all the way back to her desk.

  EIGHTEEN

David got ready for his non-date with Kelly. He was looking forward to having a decent conversation with a smart pretty woman at a restaurant. He liked Joe, but there was something different about eating dinner with your partner and with a beautiful woman. At 6:00, he got a call.

“David?” the voice on the other end asked.

  “This is David,” he answered.

“Hey David, it’s Kelly. I am so sorry to call you at such late notice, but something has come up.”

“You’re ok right?” he asked her.

“Yes, it’s Robert, my husband. He’s been injured in Iraq. It doesn’t appear to be too serious, but they’re taking him in to the Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, and they’re flying me in to meet him there.”

“Well Kelly,” David said, “there’s no need to apologize for that. I’m glad to hear that it isn’t anything too bad. Just know that he needs you there by his side.”

“You owe me dinner when I come back,” Kelly teased.

“I look forward to taking both you and Robert out for dinner,” David answered.

“Thanks,” she sighed in relief. “You are a good friend.”

“Let me know if you need anything,” he told her. They then hung up the phone. David was saddened by the loss of his dinner date. His dinner non-date, he reminded himself. He knew that it wasn’t going to lead anywhere, but he was looking forward to getting out of the house just the same. He sat and moped for a few minutes and decided that he still could go out. He was a big boy, wasn’t he?

Shaking his head at such nonsense, David decided to go out and experience some of the nightlife that this town offered. And he promised himself that he wouldn’t experience it from the cop side tonight. He wanted to let loose and be like everyone else.

He went to dinner at the Italian restaurant that he had planned to take Kelly to. He felt a little silly being there by himself, but the food was delicious. He thoroughly enjoyed his meal, like he hadn’t enjoyed the taste of food in a long time.

After dinner, he was at a loss of what to do. He knew that he didn’t want to go home. But he also knew that he didn’t want to go to a movie by himself. So, he decided to go to one of the local clubs that he had heard so much about. Being early in the evening still, he had no problems getting in. David grabbed himself a drink and sat down at a table. Even though he tried not to, his cop instinct took over and he began to case the bar.

He watched the locals at the bar greet one another. Apparently they hung out here often. He then could tell which one were the out-of-towners. He looked for a seedier element, but it was too early in the evening for that. He could see the look of loneliness that other single people had there. It was obvious that most of them were on the lookout for something they would never find at a place like this. He felt the sadness of being single wash over him, and decided that he didn’t want to be there for too long. He didn’t like the look of desperation he saw in the other single’s eyes, and hoped that the same look of desperation wasn’t reflected in his own.

But before he could get up and leave, he saw her walk in. She had the air of self-confidence around her and David watched as she cased the place herself. She wasn’t classically beautiful, but she had a curvaceous body, which she was obviously not shy about flaunting. He wasn’t sure what drew him to the curly haired woman, but he knew that he wanted to know more about her.

Amber walked into the club knowing that she was on the prowl tonight. She wasn’t sure what she was looking for, but she felt the familiar tingle that told her she was in the right place at the right time. It was all a matter of patience. She sauntered over to the bar and sat down to wait. She didn’t have to for long.

“Would it be ok if I bought you a drink?” asked a husky voice behind her.

She turned to look at who was talking to her. He wasn’t bad looking. No Mr. GQ, but clean cut, well built and well dressed.

She smiled demurely under her eyelashes at him, “That would be lovely. I assume that the offer of a drink comes with your company?”

He smiled widened at her, and led her to a small table in the
corner.

“What can I get for you?” he asked.

“Jack and Diet Coke.” she answered evenly.

“Well, that’s different,” he said with a little amazement. “Most girls order something fruity, or with a little umbrella in it.”

“I am not like most girls,” she countered back and smiled at him sultry.

“That’s a nice surprise,” he said as he went up to the bar to order and pay for their drinks.

While he was gone, Amber let her eyes travel around the club. She saw the goth girls in the corner, and the desperate older guys on the edge of the dance floor. She was glad that she didn’t have to fend them off this evening like she had to most of the time. She glanced in her purse, suspecting her vision to come across that familiar little package of drugs she always kept stored in there for nights just like this. But instead all she saw was the mandatory condom, a makeup kit, and other random unimportant miscellaneous crap she didn’t really need. Not what she was looking for, at least.

Amber’s heart took a pause as she glared at the glowing blade within her purse. It looked so lonesome without its partner in crime; its powdery companion. She tried to shrug it off, thinking it had probably just fallen out in her car was all. Nothing too serious. Nothing she couldn’t take care of back at this guy’s apartment.

As he went up to the bar, David was pleasantly surprised by the fire that he felt in this girl. He could tell that she was well groomed and obviously intelligent and he was excited that he had taken the time to come here after all.

David came back to the table with their drinks in his hand; hers in a tall glass and his in an imported beer bottle. At least he is a man with some taste, she thought to herself. She couldn’t stand men that tasted like cheap beer.

“Thank you,” she said as she took a sip of her drink. Trust Rudy the bartender to make hers ultra strong.

“My pleasure,” he said back. “My name is David.”

  “Amber.”

“Nice to meet you Amber. You live around here?

“Yeah, not too far. What about you? I don’t think I have ever seen you around before.”

The cop in David took over and he wondered if he should tell her the truth or if he should pretend to be someone else. Most girls shied away when you told them that you were a cop. He decided to be a little evasive and go with the undercover idea. Who knew, maybe she had some intel about the Harvester killings.

“I live in Heresford, which is about 30 minutes away. But I tend to come to this city a lot, so I have an apartment nearby. Since I have a conference here in the morning, and I thought it would be better just to come in tonight so I wouldn’t have to fight the traffic in the morning. I am glad I did. Seems like the local flavor has a lot to offer,” he said as he eyed her appreciatively.

She smiled seductively at him, as if to promise him a better time than he ever thought possible. “So tell me about what you do.”

“I work with computers,” he lied. “Which I know, sounds fake, but I really am. We are on the verge of making a new interactive touch screen computer which will revolutionize the home system.”

Amber perked up. Here was a man with intelligence, and money. Not to mention, she loved anything that had to do with a computer.

“Oooh,” she said. “Tell me more.”

He talked for a while longer, fabricating stories about the struggle he had to get his business growing, and the idea that he had formulated which made him sought out in the computer world. Amber listen appreciatively as she learned more about the inner workings of what he did.

“I have talked enough,” he said, thinking more like I have bullshitted enough. “What about you?”

“You don’t want to hear about me. My life is not all that interesting,” she said. “Let’s go dance.”

David eyed her warily. To a cop, this was a red flag. Most people loved to talk about themselves. But he had to remind himself that she wasn’t a suspect. So he agreed and they went on to the dance floor. She let the beat of the fast tempoed song take over and began to sway her hips in motion with the music. David held his own and kept up with her and her movement. Amber was impressed since most men were not able to match her dance style.

The music changed to a slower song and they put their bodies together. Amber slithered seductively next to David, letting him feel all her curves next to him. She heard him suck in his breath as she turned to place her round bottom on him, feeling the tightness in his pants. Slowly she turned back around to face him, never stopping the flow of the dance. He was standing there still, as if he were in shock. She put her arms around his neck.

“What do you say that we go back to your place and continue this dance,” she said to him.

He nodded numbly and they left the loud musty club into the crisp air outside. He wondered what had come over him. He knew that it wasn’t a good idea to take a strange girl home. But he was drawn to her vivaciousness and he wanted more of her.

“I’m not that far, just a few blocks away,” he said. “Do you want to follow me there?”

“Sure, let me go grab my car,” she said. “I’m in the white Toyota. It isn’t much, but it gets me from point A to point B”

“Gray Taurus,” he said. “I’ll pull my car right in front of yours and you can follow me home.”

He grabbed her hand as they walked towards her little white car. He made sure she climbed safely in and went to fetch his own automobile. Again, he wondered what the hell he was doing; he never had strange women over for sex. But the stress of the week and the feeling of sadness washing over him lately had made him vulnerable. He wanted to feel her sense of aliveness flow through his body.

Amber liked that he made sure she’d gotten in her car safely, but it still didn’t change the fact of how patronizing he had been. Typical man to control the situation, she cursed silently. While she waited for her new guest to find his car, she searched her floorboards until her fingers came across the lovely baggie containing her stash of GHA. She stuffed in it her bra, telling herself she would use it the first opportunity to arise.

He drove over to her and waited until she pulled in behind him. They pulled up to his apartment complex and went over to her car to help her out. Again he held her hand. It made him feel good, as if they were connected. He was still apprehensive about having a strange girl over. He wasn’t a prude, but he wasn’t used to casual sex either. Especially with someone he didn’t know anything about.

“Relax David,” she said. “I like you, and I am not going to bite. Well, unless of course you ask me to.”

They both giggled and the tension loosened between the two of them some. They walked to his apartment and he opened the door for her. She flipped the switch on the lamp as he closed to door and turned the lock. They turned to look at each other. She walked up towards him and let her hands wander up his chest. He leaned in and kissed her lightly on the lips.

They deepened their kiss and the temperature began to rise. Amber pulled his shirt off to feel his chest. She then unbuckled his belt in order to remove his pants. He stood there erect at her attentiveness. She kicked off her shoes and laid him on the couch, taking his large manhood in her mouth, savoring every ridge. He moaned in pleasure as she moved her mouth on his shaft.

David reached up and removed her top and bra, flinging them to the side, along with the little package she intended to use. He reached up to fondle her large breasts and take them in his mouth. She grew hot as he used his tongue over her nipples, teasing them to tautness. She stood back and up in order to take off her skirt and thong.

“Let’s go in the bedroom,” he suggested hazily.

She agreed and they went into the bedroom, kissing and fondling all the way there. Once in the bedroom, she laid him back on the bed as she straddled him on either side with her legs. His rigid cock was waiting in anticipation. She used her body to slowly slide down his shaft and they both moaned in pleasure. She then rode him watching the pleasure on his face. She loved th
e control she got, watching them writhe under her body.

It had been a long time since David had been with a woman and Amber had a way of making him feel alive. She knew how to pleasure him, and he wanted to return the favor.

Unexpectedly, he turned her over and slid himself deep inside her again. She wrapped her legs around him, feeling his every thrusting inch. Then something unusual happened; Amber orgasmed. It had been forever since a man had made her cum. She moaned against him and arched her back to get him in deeper, reveling in the feel of the overwhelming bliss.

David felt her body clench and then relax in the most ultimate of pleasure. Not being able to take anymore, he let his own load go deep inside her. He collapsed down on the bed. They laid in a daze for a while. David was relaxed like he hadn’t been in a long time. He rolled over to drape his arm over the mysterious girl he had invited into his apartment. Amber lay there stunned at what just happened. She had lost control. It wasn’t like Amber to lose control, and it scared her a little. Hell, it scared her a lot.

David was falling asleep. He could feel it. The combination of a good meal, drinks, dancing and fabulous sex had eased his tension. He kissed her on the forehead, getting a mouthful of hair.

She wasn’t sure what to do. She hated the fact that he had made her lose control. She had promised that no man would ever be in control of her again. And she hated the confusion that he made her feel. It wasn’t like her to not know what to do. Amber always knew what to do.

She heard him fall asleep, his arm still draped over her in a comforting gesture. She knew that he wouldn’t be one of her victims. She felt something for him that she hadn’t felt about any guy in a long time, not since that asshole had hurt her. And it scared the hell out of her. She didn’t want to be the victim again. The whole night had been shot. She didn’t remember to drug him, she wasn’t able to kill him. Shit. Amber wiggled out of his embrace and walked into the living room. She gathered her clothes and got dressed, still in a daze.
