“Yeah!” I said, a little to energetically.
“Good, pick me up at eight.” She replied, smiling widely, causing my heart to practically explode in my chest, then turned and strode away.
I couldn’t help it, my eyes went to her perfect backside involuntarily, and I watched as she sashayed away, her hips creating a perfect metronome with each step.
“Did that really just fucking happen? Am I crazy…” I whispered to myself.
“I don’t know dude, but if you’re nuts so am I.” A voice said from my side.
Recognizing the voice of the speaker, I turned my head and stared shocked at Billy, who stared back at me with the same incredulous expression. Grins split out on both our faces, almost in unison, and we high-fived, after Winnie had turned the corner of course.
“This is totally bodacious bro! Winnie just asked you out, on your birthdays no less.” Billy said, as we began walking towards the student parking lot.
“I know dude, but hold up, can we talk about how you saved by the bell, literally.” I replied, punching my friend in the arm playfully.
We playfought for a minute on the walk and then stopped at our respective vehicles, we always parked next to each other, at the motorcycle section of student parking. Billy was also a childhood friend, but whereas Winnie and I grew apart, Billy and I became closer, our love of motorcycles was one of many things we had in common. He drove a cherry red Kawasaki Ninja, it was brand new, the latest greatest model. It practically screamed speed at you. His family was old money, and his dad and mom bought him stuff to make up for not being around.
My family was not old money, but we did ok, and my dad and I fixed up a classic Triumph Bonneville from the wheels up, restoring it to immaculate condition, even finishing the paint in the silver and red of the iconic brand. We had spent the whole summer of my Junior year restoring the bike, it was the last time my dad and I had gotten hangout, because right after that he began the Space Shuttle project.
That was another thing was shared. My parents were also not around, they worked at the same place as Billy’s parents, and pretty much every other adult of working age in Cape Canaveral and the surrounding areas, at the National Aeronautics Space Administration, or what is more commonly known as NASA. Pretty much everything was centered around the Space Shuttle. The Cape, which was the area where all the launch facilities and surrounding buildings are located, was where my parent’s and Billy’s worked every single day of the week. It pretty much forced the two of us together, as we were both only children with no parents around.
“I’ll call you tonight,” Billy said, while donning his helmet and straddling his bike, “I want all the details dude.”
“I don’t even know what to do with this, I’m at a loss.” I replied, donning my riding glasses and headphones, then getting on and starting my bike.
Both of us started our engines and revved them for a moment making sure they were running right.
“Dude! She asked you out, you better get to second base!” He yelled, over the sound of our motorcycles, the leer on his face showing his true thoughts, he totally wanted me to score.
“Whatever man, I’ll hook up with you later.” I yelled back, hit play on my Walkman, then revved my engine and headed out, Billy following along behind.
With a honk and a wave, we split up heading in opposite directions as we left the parking lot. Billy’s family had moved right after we started high school to the other side of town, my family still lived in the old neighborhood, closer to the space center. I remember when he had moved, I asked my dad about moving too, but he just shrugged it off, saying that we were in the safest neighborhood and Peter, Billy’s dad, was making a mistake. My dad said he was trading safety and security for a big house and status. Either way, we didn’t move.
I gunned my bike and began to weave in and out of the burgeoning afternoon traffic. It was a Friday and school just got out, so it was just after 3:00 PM and everyone was getting out of work early for the weekend as well. It was times like this that I envied Billy’s Ninja, my Triumph had a sidecar, which made it hard to weave in and out of traffic, but my dad had insisted on it. He said that it was for safety and that I’d appreciate not having my guy friend’s crotches all up on me if I have the sidecar. My thoughts were that no girls would have their love tunnels pressed against me either, but life was a give and take, so whatever.
None of this was really on my mind though, honestly, I was hardly paying attention to the road either. The only thing going through my head though were thoughts of Winnie and what tonight would bring. So much so, in fact, that I barely reacted in time as a jet-black Ford Bronco cut me off, coming so close that if I didn’t slam my brakes it would have sideswiped me, then so long yours truly.
I swerved left and right, almost crashing into cars on both sides of me, before I got control again. The Bronco was still a dozen feet in front of me and stopped at a red light. The truck was topless, one of those older pick-ups with the roll bars and stuff, in the back were three football jerks, making rude gestures and laughing at me. I hated those assholes. The driver held his hand up and flipped me off. Of course, it was Johnny Clark and his goons. The light changed, and he peeled out speeding through the intersection. I adjusted my goggles and headphones, then headed out, paying more attention now.
I made it home in short order, no more dickhead jocks, and pulled in to our carport and parked my bike in its usual spot. Even the brush with Johnny couldn’t bring me down. I was meeting up with Winnie in a few hours, nothing could bring me down. At least, that’s what I thought at the time. I grabbed my backpack from the sidecar and headed into my house. Once inside, I tossed my bag on the kitchen counter and went to the fridge.
“Ok, we got OJ, some purple stuff, some soda, and some Sunny Delight. I’ll take the Sunny D.” I said to the air around me.
My music still blaring on my Walkman, I sang out loud at the top of my lungs to Pat Benatar as I snagged the Sunny D out of my icebox.
“We belong to the light, we belong to the darkness!” I belted.
I opened the bottle of delicious orange nectar and held it to my mouth and closed my eyes as I sand the end of the song.
“We belong, we belong, we belong together…” I trailed off.
Taking a sip of my drink and opening my eyes at the same time, then proceeded to spit the contents back out of my mouth and spraying the two feet of area in my immediate vicinity. In front of me were my Mom and Dad, the latter holding a VHS Camcorder and both laughing hysterically.
CHAPTER 2 –
“Jesus! You two scared the shit out of me, what are you doing here?” I stammered, trying to control the shock and embarrassment of having been caught singing like an idiot on camera.
“Like we’d miss your birthday buddy.” My dad replied, in between breathes of laughter.
“Who knew we had such a virtuoso in the family.” My mom quipped, cackling at her joke, my dad chortling along.
“Come on you guys, it wasn’t that funny and seriously, how come you guys aren’t at work?” I asked, pulling the headphones off my head and glaring at my parents.
The pair took their sweet time getting their laughter under control, my dad still keeping the recorder on me, but eventually they did, and they were all smiles as they looked at me.
“Did you seriously think we’d forget your birthday? We took the day off and came home to celebrate with you. Your mom baked a cake and I already made some steaks and your other favorites.” My dad replied.
That’s what that smell was? I thought it smelled good in here. My scowl immediately disappeared, replaced with a smile aimed at my parents. Even though they were gone a lot they were good people.
“Thanks guys.” I said, heading over and hugging them both. They returned the hug and we all sat there for a moment.
“Ok, enough of that then, come, everything’s out back.” My dad said, clearing his throat and heading towards the backyard.
My mom and I share
d a grin and followed along after him. Once out through the back sliding-glass doors I smiled at the spread. They had gone all out, we had a picnic table in our backyard, next to our pool, and it was laden with all my favorite foods. There was fried chicken, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, green beans with ham in it, fresh scratch baked biscuits, and a chocolate pie for dessert. To drink there was my favorite soda, IBC Root Beer, it was perfect! Not only did I get some quality time with my parents, I got all my favorite stuff, add in my date with Winnie tonight and life was perfect. There was literally nothing else I could ask for, life was pretty damn awesome right now. Of course, that’s when everything fell to shit…
Thank you again for taking the time to read my books. I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. I am also creating a new Facebook group, YouTube Channel, and Podcast. It’s going to be called G-Lit as a play on the genre and my name. I will only be inviting a few authors to start and all members who join have to click from one of our books. The main rule is DBD – Don’t Be a Dick! Just cool people who like the same stuff and chill. The group just started so it’s small, but intimate here is the link.
