  “And not because of that.”

  “That?”

“Never mind.” Sophia laid back down. “So Taylor had a clue the whole time?”

Sophia’s phone buzzed on the nightstand.

“Speak of the devil.” Jess handed her the phone.

“Fuck. I don’t want to talk to anyone, especially not him.”

“Take the call.” Jess stood and walked to the door. “I’ll be in the other room if you need anything.” She gently closed the door behind her.

“Benedetti, it’s Taylor. You still half in the bag?”

  Jesus, what a prick.

“I’m just having a cup of coffee.”

“Good. Make sure you’re sober or at least swallow a bottle of mouthwash. You’re in my squad now. Grab your gear and meet me at the office in an hour.”

“I…” Sophia swung her legs out of bed, glanced at the clock and stumbled toward the shower.

  “Your mine now, Benedetti.”

Sophia threw the phone on the bed and stripped off her sweats. She was really going to have to work on Taylor’s attitude.

  She didn’t belong to anyone.
