“Brolach,” she said. “You can save her. You have to finish the blood exchange and turn her. It’s the only way.”

“I promised Waverly I’d give her a chance to ease her family into it since she’ll no longer be able to move about in the day.”

“That’s not true. We’re hybrids. Many years ago I ended up turning a woman who was a close friend to me. She turned out to be a day walker. In every other way, she was like other vampires. Do it, brother. Turn your mate before it’s too late.”

Brolach looked at Devin. “Do it,” Waverly’s brother said. “Save her.”

He took Waverly from Devin’s arms and held her close. Even though she’d been almost drained, Brolach bit into her wrist and took a small amount of blood. That was all he needed. He then sank his fangs into his own and placed it against her mouth.

At first, she didn’t do anything. He clenched his fist, forcing the blood to flow faster and into her mouth. It was only a matter of seconds before Waverly moaned, then sucked on his wrist. She reached up, held on to it and drew on it harder. As she swallowed mouthful after mouthful, Brolach felt his vampire side claim her as a mate. She suddenly let go of him arm and went limp with her eyes closed.

“What happened?” Devin asked. “Did it work? Why isn’t she awake?”

Kaisa went and put her arm around Devin’s shoulders. “It’s fine. It worked. Waverly is in the midst of turning. I can hear her heart beating. She’ll awaken shortly.”

Brolach held his mate closer and kissed her forehead. He noticed the wound in her neck had healed. As he waited for Waverly to wake up, he watched his siblings and Cameron handle the humans who’d regained consciousness. The vampire no longer alive, the hold he had over his servants was no more. It hadn’t been something they’d chosen. Torger forced each one to look into his eyes and compelled them to forget their time with the vampire and what had transpired there on the hill. He then sent them on their way.

  “Brolach?”

He looked down at Waverly. She was awake and looked no longer on death’s door. “How do you feel?”

“Better.” She ran her tongue over her new fangs. “Do I have fangs?”

“I had to turn you. It was the only way to save you. I know you wanted to wait, but I couldn’t lose you.”

She smiled, flashing more of her fangs. “I’m glad you did. Dying would have sucked. I’ll just have to think of some other way to explain to my family why I have to change how I live.”

“You don’t have to worry about that for a while. Kaisa turned a human before. Hybrids make day walker vampires. Once you reach the stage where you should be aging and you’re not, that’s when you’ll have to do some explaining.”

“You’ll have me to help, sis,” Devin said.

Waverly’s gaze shot to her brother. “Devin? You know about Brolach and the others?”

“Yeah, and I’m okay with it.” He leaned toward her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “I’m sure you two want to be alone right now.” Devin pushed to his feet. “I think I’ll see if I can snag the interest of a pretty hybrid.”

Waverly shook her head. “He’ll never change. He’s going to drive Kaisa nuts.”

Brolach chuckled. “I think my sister will be able to handle him just fine.”

She sat up on his lap and cupped his face in her hands. “I love you. I’m glad I’m mated to both sides of you. We now have an eternity together, and I plan to show you each day of it how strong my love for you is.”

He kissed her hard and long. Once he pulled away, Brolach said in a gruff voice filled with emotion, “I love you, my mate. I waited three thousand years to find you. Nothing will ever tear us apart.”

Brolach stood and let Waverly stand. He put his arm around her shoulders and tucked her tight up against his side. There were still more vampires to hunt down and end their existence, but that would wait for now. He had something more important to do like show his mate how good it was to sink her new fangs into him as he made love to her.
