With an effort, she pulled her lips from his. “And will you take me to Paris again?” she asked, half playful and half in earnest. “Or will your doubts yet torment you?”

He pondered a moment, and then laughed softly. “But there will be no more ballets, I think. By my faith, Madame, I was minded to beat you well for that disgraceful costume you wore!”

She smiled nervously. “Then it is well for me that you did not see the gown I refused to wear.”

“No matter. You were fetching in it, and I hated every man who looked at you!”

“Oh my love!” she cried, and threw her arms about his neck. “Were there a thousand men in the room, I would see only your eyes upon me!”

He pressed her down upon the soft bed, his hot lips finding her mouth and neck and tremulous bosom; her arms, twined about his strong shoulders, caressed the glistening flesh that rippled under her hands. The sunny room, the sounds from without, faded away in the passion that roared in their ears, ignited by the spark that seemed to pass between their two bodies, pressed one upon the other. There was a soft knock at the door, and Louise called softly for Madame. André raised his head impatiently.

“Go away!” he said fiercely. “Madame is occupied!”

Marielle giggled. “And besieged and under attack,” she whispered. She might have said more, but his hungry lips closed possessively over hers in a fierce and conquering kiss.

Although, in truth, it would have been hard to say who was the victor—and who the vanquished.
