  Introduction

The pale white being looked at the wreckage of the blasted giant black warships and smiled, at least this part of the plan had come to fruition. It focused its middle eye on the blasted moon-sized black ships and reveled that they were now out of the game. They had fought ferociously and a hundred of his warships had been destroyed or damaged beyond repair, but now these potential enemies were eliminated. It was fortunate that the Black Ships’ numbers had been greatly reduced in the war they fought in the distant galaxy. Removing the survivors wouldn’t have been possible but for the defeat they faced against the millions of warships defending that galaxy. Now there were just two civilizations remaining before the invasion could begin. The Tiny Beings had fled and would have to be found one day and eliminated but that would be in the future. The two remaining civilizations represented an immediate threat to moving colonists into the two spiral galaxies. The humans that were assisted decades ago had now disappeared and nothing further could be done until they were found; but today was a victory to be celebrated.

“Grengen, our two vessels searching for the Human Warships have stopped communicating.”

The Grengen whipped its head around, “WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?”

“They failed to report in on their last scheduled times.”

The Grengen’s Fleet was not in the universe where the two giant warships were scouting for the missing civilization and a Scout had come through the black hole from the Governing Planet’s Galaxy to inform him of what was happening. “They did not report anything before they stopped communicating?”

“No, Grengen, they did not. One was ordered to go and assist the Greng scouting the small galaxies around the Human’s spiral galaxy and that is the last contact made with either of them.”

“What efforts have been made to contact them?”

“We’ve used our most powerful communicators and there’s been no reply. The links to them on the Communicator’s panel have also gone dark.”

The Grengen sat in his chair and thought about what was happening. He looked at the data coming in on his panel about the locations of the two missing ships and felt a sense of dread take him. He didn’t want to believe the two scouts were destroyed but what else could account for their not responding? The links going dark spoke volumes. The only way that could happen was the destruction of the sending modules on both ships. If they were indeed destroyed, that would put an immediate stop to the planned invasion, “What has the Council determined?”

The Greng Scout hesitantly replied, “There are three possibilities, Grengen. The Humans destroyed them, the Civilization in the other Spiral Galaxy destroyed them, or a species unknown to us destroyed them.”

“So the consensus is that they are destroyed and are no longer active?”

“The communicator links on the two scouts are no longer active and that would only happen if the communication systems were damaged or destroyed on both ships. The Council feels this has to mean they are destroyed.”

The Grengen stared at the Scout Greng on his monitor and then activated the small receiver in his ear and whispered over a private circuit, “What do you think about this?”

The ship computer’s voice came over the speaker hidden in his ear, “Given the current information, the two scouts must have been destroyed. It is also clear that they were destroyed extremely fast in order to prevent their getting a distress message out to the Council before they were destroyed. There is now an unknown element operating in that area of space.”

“The Human Warships we recently scanned would not be capable of destroying one of our warships fast enough to do that? I really doubt they could even damage one of our vessels,” the Fleet Grengen agreed.

The Computer quickly said, “Then that leaves the other Civilization the Humans call the Darkness or an unknown force we’ve not seen.”

  “Do you have a recommendation?”

“We know the last reported position of those two scouts. I suggest a vessel be sent to investigate.”

“And how would you suggest getting one there to do it?”

‘That galaxy where the Black Ships fled from is the fastest way. Or, the black hole that leads to the other spiral galaxy.”

The Grengen’s three eyes narrowed, “The Civilization around the black hole on the other side of the Tiny Being’s former galaxy possesses a weapon that could possibly damage or destroy our vessels and the one where the Black Ships went has hundreds of millions of warships ready to at
tack anything that enters that galaxy. I am not going to endanger my Fleet by going through either black hole.”

“I’m not sure you have an option, Grengen.”

  “Why is that, Computer?”

“Because the Council sent this Scout to tell you about the two vessels. Why would they want you to know but for their wanting you to take action to find out what happened to them? They have thousands of warships around the main planet but they chose to send this scout here. He came here for a reason.”

The Grengen’s head went down and he looked at the Greng commanding the Scout who was still patiently staring at him on his monitor. It had to see that he was communicating with the ship’s computer. “Do you have another message to deliver?” the Fleet Grengen demanded.

The Greng commanding the scout was clearly nervous as it said, “The Council has left it to you to find out what happened to the two missing Scouts.”

The Grengen scowled as he spoke again to the Ship’s Computer, “Isn’t this just a broken egg!” He looked back at the Scout on his display and knew he was a direct relative of the Council’s Great Grengen. The Scout was obviously nervous and feared that the he would send him to investigate the disappearance. The Grengen actually thought about ordering him through one of the black holes to check out what happened but knew there would be a heavy price to pay if he did and something happened to the scout. “Tell the Great Grengen that I will investigate this issue”

The Scout Greng’s relief was clear as he disappeared from the monitor. The Computer located deep inside the giant warship said, “I think the former galaxy of the Tiny Beings would be the best choice to attempt first.”

“Other than the hundreds of millions of warships we’d have to fight our way through in the other galaxy, is there another reason for that choice?”

“One of the Scouts was in that galaxy when it was ordered to leave and assist the other scout in searching for the Humans. You’re going to have to eliminate that galaxy as the place it was destroyed before going to the other spiral galaxy. I also believe that if our ships go through that black hole at maximum speed, they should escape before the gravity towers can open fire on them.”

“Do you think I should go?”

“NO! The ships that are going will be entering a dangerous situation and I certainly don’t want to be on one of them. I would hope you would feel the same,” the Computer answered emphatically.

“But if something goes wrong, the Council will censure me if I don’t go. That could lead to my execution.”

“Then send another of similar statue as your own to do it. They won’t censure your sincere resolve if you do that. The Council understands sending others to do dangerous things. They probably expect you to do exactly that.”

The Grengen hated the computer on multiple occasions in the past and this was another instance. “You know what you’re saying?”

“I do. Either send him or you’ll have to go yourself. There are no other options given the high ranking Grengs you have to choose from. I highly recommend sending him unless you’re prepared for him to replace you if things go really bad.”

“Why are you so frightened, Computer?”

“Those two scouts had to be destroyed at an incredible speed to prevent their communicating a distress message. Personally, I don’t want to move anywhere near whatever did it. I do not believe that the civilization in the center of that galaxy called the Darkness could have done it that fast. There has to be another danger in one of those two spiral galaxies that we don’t know about and I don’t want to meet up with it, do you?”

“Do you think the Humans have learned of our presence in their galaxy?”

“I do find it odd that they’ve suddenly disappeared after attacking the Black Ships in this universe. It may be possible they saw one of your warships following the Black Ships to that galaxy and learned that we are now involved in their war. The two scouts stopping reporting right after the human’s disappearance but that may not have any relationship to what happened. If the Humans could destroy our warships as fast as this appears to have happened, why would they be compelled to hide?

“However, you’re right about the human warships we scanned attacking the Black Ships, they could not have destroy one of our warships fast enough to prevent it from communicating. I really don’t think they could destroy one of our ships with all the ships we scanned combined. This issue with the two scouts had to be done by something else.”

“In the data we took from one of their ships long ago, there was a rule the Humans believed in.”

The Computer paused and then said, “The Unknown Enemy will kill you.”

  “That’s the one.”

“That would explain why the humans have gone into hiding. It also appears there is another unknown enemy in those galaxies; are you still thinking about going?”

The Fleet Grengen breathed deeply through his neck openings and raised his head. He touched his panel and a familiar face appeared on his monitor, “How may I assist you, Father?”

“The Council has ordered me to investigate the loss of communication with two Scouts in the Human Sector of Space. You will take your Shell, go through the black hole in the Tiny Being’s galaxy, and investigate what happened to them.” The Grengen looked away and touched his panel again, “I’m sending you the data sent to me by the Council and a recording of the conversation I’ve just had with my Lead Computer.”

“Do you have any other recommendations, Father?”

“Find out what happened and get out fast!!”

  “We’ll be leaving momentarily.”

His eldest hatchling’s face disappeared and the Grengen hated the computer with a passion. It was right in its logic but he was placing his favorite child in extreme danger. He hated the computer but his fear was greater than his love for his child.

  • • •

The Shell Greng listened to the conversation between his father and the Lead Computer and frowned. It was clear that his father feared doing this himself. He lowered his head in anger and heard his vessel’s Lead Computer say in his ear, “I believe the other computer’s advice is appropriate and you should send all the ships in your shell through the black hole simultaneously.”

  “Isn’t that dangerous?”

“Not as dangerous as giving that civilization time to target those giant gravity weapons on the site where you exit the event horizon. The best advice your father said was at the end.”

  “What?”

“Get in and get out fast! That advice also applies to the black hole you’re going to transit.”

The Shell Greng looked at the data coming in on his panel and moved his ears in agreement. He turned his giant warship and the other nine ships in his Shell turned with him. He would probably find out quickly what danger lurked in the Human Sector. He hoped fervently he would survive the discovery.

  Chapter One

The Shell Greng saw the black hole getting larger on his main monitor as he thought about the situation he found himself in. He really didn’t like being ordered on this mission. Logic demanded that there had to be some new enemy in the Human Sector, which had not been previously discovered. He pressed buttons on his panel and issued orders as the light illuminated indicating all of the warships in his shell were on the frequency, “All ships will follow me into the black hole in tight formation and, once we clear the event horizon on the other side, we will go to maximum speed and fly away from that galaxy. If one of us is hit and disabled, it will activate its self-destruct systems and the remaining ships will continue our flight. I will not risk any more of my ships to go back and save you. Once we’re clear of that civilization in the center of that spiral galaxy, we will change course and move toward the last reported position of the scout that was in that galaxy. If we find that Scout destroyed, we will not stop to do scans. I will assign each ship a section of the Scout to scan and we will do it on the fly. If the Scout is not there, we will head toward the other reported locatio
n of the second Scout in the other galaxy. We will make another flyby scan and move out of that galaxy quickly.”

The Warships Lead Computer quickly said, “Do you think you will get enough information doing it this way? You will be punished if you don’t bring back appropriate information.”

“It will have to do. Something destroyed those two scouts faster than they could report it. I will not allow my ships to be stationary targets for whatever did it.”

“The Council might disagree with your decision.”

“So be it. It probably won’t be enough time for one ship to scan the wreckage and get a complete view of what happened, if the Scout is actually destroyed. But with each ship focusing on a specific area on the scout, the ten scans combined should be as good as a single full scan made by one stationary ship. In fact, it might be better. I’ll send you the data and as it comes in from my ships and you can organize it into a whole picture of what we see.”

“So you do agree with the Council that they were destroyed?”

“And you don’t? Nothing else would match what the data suggests. Every link to those scouts went off line simultaneously. The computer records show that the second scout went off line later than the first one, which suggests it was destroyed at a different location. The first scout’s links probably weren’t noticed until one of the communicators noticed it hadn’t reported in on schedule.”

The Shell Greng paused and then said, “You will send the total scans once they’re organized into a single scan to all of the ships in my shell, so that the odds of getting the information back to the council is enhanced in the event we’re attacked.”

There was a long pause and the Greng heard, “The Computer on your father’s ship is a coward.”

“That computer is not here and we are. If you could avoid this mission, would you?” the Shell Greng countered.
