‘I had no choice,’ Jago answered, not letting go of her hand.

‘And what of you, Jago Harker – what do you believe?’ she asked as she moved closer to him.

‘I know that I had thought I had lost something quite precious and now it has been found,’ he said as he leant towards her and they kissed.

‘Paradise was lost and now it is found,’ Lana whispered. ‘I hope we can be together.’

‘Why didn’t you tell me you were here?’ he asked.

‘I told Lucca and took him the Sinan. Did he not say?’

Jago looked at her as if it didn’t matter. ‘It is all finished. The Oracle said it would end this way and it did,’ he answered.

‘We are both alive, and that is all that matters.’

Neither of them saw the man in the shadow of the doorway. He pulled down his hat and lifted the collar of his leather coat to keep out the growing gloom of evening. He looked out from the alleyway next to the picture house and slipped a gloved hand into his pocket. Taking the revolver from within, he loaded six silver-tipped bullets. Then, slamming the chamber, he pulled back the firing hammer and cocked the trigger. As the fog rolled along the street, fresh from the river, the man left the darkness behind. He stepped from the alley and walked towards Betty’s Café.
