I snorted. “Yeah, I don’t see Skye going for that.”
I looked around the backyard at where my family and friends were all playing and laughing together. Leia giggled as Dante swung her around in a wide circle before setting her down so she could run to catch up with Rhys and Luke. He watched her go before tugging Tate under his arm.
The backdoor opened again and Sawyer took off with a yell to his grandparents. I gave my parents a wave as they joined the party.
Skye came up beside me and looped her arm around mine, leaning her head against my shoulder as she watched the chaos around us.
“I love our life,” she whispered softly.
I kissed the side of her head. I loved our life, too.

How did I get here?
I keep asking myself that, and the truth is, I got here with a lot of love, a lot of support, and a lot of blessings.
This series started on a whim, and only three people knew about it: Krista Davis, Valerie Fink, and Jessica Baker. The pushed, pleaded, and cajoled (and occasionally threatened) me to keep going. Their support of what would become the Blackwater world was unwavering. The love they gave me was incomparable.
The game changer, for me, was when Vonetta Young got ahold of it. She refused to let me keep this book to myself (which was all I wanted). She forced me, in the best ways, to expose myself and my novel to people who embraced it and championed it.
