Books only get made if someone is willing to take a punt on half-formed ideas, and to that end I am grateful to my three publishers at One World, Crown, and HarperCollins. As a first time author, I feel immensely lucky to have found a team at each that supported my work unstintingly. In particular, it has been a pleasure working with Sam Carter, Jonathan Bentley-Smith, Tim Duggan, Will Wolfslau, and Udayan Mitra. More than anyone, I was fortunate to have in Toby Mundy a generous and supportive agent, without whose good humor and encouragement my original proposal would certainly never have been written, and the resulting book probably would never have been finished.
Throughout this process, however, no one did more to support my writing than my wife, Mary. She was game enough to move to India in the first place, becoming my companion throughout the biggest adventure of both of our lives. She proved enthusiastically supportive from the first moment the idea of writing a book began to take shape, and in the years since has shouldered more burdens than was reasonable, not least as I slunk off in the early hours of the morning to write. I will always feel grateful that she gave me her hand, as well as for the fact that she is the best proofreader and editor I know. To her, my love and thanks are owed most of all.
Neither of my two children—Alexander, who was born in India, and Sophie, who arrived in Singapore just a few days after I had handed in my first draft—are old enough to know the debt I owe their mother. Yet hopefully in later life they might come to forgive their father for his moments of book-related distraction during their earliest days, and to understand that they both provided a source of joy and inspiration throughout the writing process. Lastly, I remain endlessly grateful to my parents, who gently encouraged my desire to write from a young age, and whose bottomless support throughout my life I value above all. With enduring affection, this book is dedicated to them.
