I lay on the bed, completely spent. The blonde woman beside me smiled and snuggled up into my arm. We were breathless and the irony was, we both needed another shower. “You are one hell of a lover. I hate to think where you got those mad skills.”
“I took my college education seriously.” She sat up on one arm and stared at me. “What? They don’t teach that in medical school?”
“No, but I didn’t study as much as you might hope.” I laughed. “I spent a lot of time doing extra-curricular activities.”
“I see. Well, they have certainly paid off. Thank you to all those who helped you with your research.” She gave me a mock salute. Then it dawned on me- I did like her. This felt a lot like my serious, albeit relatively short time with Andrea, the only girl I ever said, “I love you too.” How did that work out for you, Bullet? Hmm…not too well. Now she was my sister-in-law and I had to be okay with that. Hell no, I wasn’t doing that again. Women were a part of life, but I would never say that again or mean it. I had to put the kibosh on this now. I had a devilish idea, one that would surely end any ideas that Lilly might have about me.
“So what did you think about today? Enjoy your trip to Taylors Island?” I stroked her arm and absently stared at the ceiling.
She flipped over on the bed, leaning on her hands and elbows. She pushed my hair back from my eyes. “Yes and no. The water was perfect. I liked the little island too.”
“I guess Rafe and Eve kind of shocked you?”
“Yes, a little.” She looked at me thoughtfully, “Um…do you hang out with them much?” I knew what she was asking me. Are you as perverted as they are?
“From time to time I do, with Rafe of course. I’d never met Eve until this trip.”
“I see.” I let her think about that for a moment.
“What made you uncomfortable? Seeing them doing it on the sand? In public? Or just seeing them naked period?”
She rolled over on her back and stared at the ceiling with me. I didn’t want to look at her face now that I knew the truth about how I felt. “I guess it was the public thing. I have seen naked people before you know.”
“Oh good, because Rafe and Eve wanted to know if we would return the favor.” My proposal was met with silence.
“What do you mean?”
“They would like to watch us sometime. You know, not participate just watch, although they might participate with one another.” She slid off the bed and on to her feet. I leaned up on one arm, watching her with amusement and regret. That was a weird combination. What was I doing? Oh yeah, total screwing this up, whatever it was.
“I’m going to go get dressed. It’s getting cold in here.”
Was that a tear on her face? I sat up and said, “Okay, there’s a robe inside that closet if you want to use it.” Lilly opened the door and slid the robe off the hanger. Blue looked good on her. Well, I messed this up, I might as well go all the way. “Why don’t you let me know what you decide at dinner this evening? It’s our last night here.”
Lilly stared at me, her lips clenched tightly. With a nod she left me, slipping out of the room like a cat. An angry wildcat with too much class to argue or scream at me.
The truth was, Lilly was too good for me.
I knew it even if she didn’t. How could she know about my permanent membership with Executive Massage, my monthly threesomes with a doctor friend and his wife? How could she know about the neighbor who liked receiving my house calls? And my long history with Carmen Fuentes and the Milford chick. She didn’t. She couldn’t. She saw a good-looking doctor who was on top of his game with no strings attached. Yeah, she was too good for me. Well, this was going to end right here. I couldn’t afford to give my heart away.
I put on a pair of shorts and stared at myself in the mirror. Yeah, Bullet. You are one son of a bitch!
There was nothing to do now except wait on Lilly. I wondered how this would end…
