Whispers In The Dark Page 20

by BJ James

Freedom, Hunter Slade’s original bronze of a lovely woman with a sea hawk lifting from her hands, had, indeed, found the perfect place. It seemed right that she be there by the bay, that she stood facing the sea, keeping her watch.

“Someone to welcome us each time we come home,” Rafe commented quietly.

“Someone to welcome us each time we return to the lodge,” Valentina corrected. Stepping into his embrace, she stood on tiptoe to kiss him. “Wherever we go, whatever we do, whatever life brings to us, I’m home, here in your arms.”

“Irish.” He drew her close, held her tighter. “I love you.”

“I know.” Turning in his embrace, she nestled back against his hard, broad chest. Her arms folded over his at her waist. “If I didn’t, all I would need to do is look at her. The symbol of all you’ve given me.”

  “Freedom?”

“Freedom,” she looked to the bronze sea hawk, lifting from a bronze hand. “But first courage. The courage to let David go. To live again.” Turning in the shelter of his arms, she lifted her lips to his kiss, murmuring softly as her mouth opened to his, “To love again.”

Fate or serendipity? Who would ever know?

All that really mattered was that out of tragedy had come fulfillment, and Valentina had come full circle. She had come home.

Where her dreams would be dreams of a green eyed panther from the bayous.

Where whispers in the dark would be whispers of love.
