“You make it awfully hard to get out of here,” she chided him, though her tone had no bite to it.
He nuzzled against her neck. “You make me hard.”
She laughed against him, letting her head fall back on his shoulder. He smiled into the crook of her neck.
“Be serious,” she told him, laughter still in her voice. She repeated, “I need to go.”
“Hmm,” he pretended to think the matter over. “Or you could just stay.”
With an exaggerated sigh, she turned in his arms, throwing her own around his neck and shoulders. Leaning close so that her lips were just an inch from his, she admitted, “I’d like that. But I still need to go.”
She pulled away and it was effort that Lucas let her go. Kate adjusted her red dress, realizing just how much she really had wanted to have him based on the length of it. It barely covered her rear and without a bra—or panties, now—she felt just shy of naked.
Lucas obviously thought something similar, the way his eyes were raking over her as though he was hungry again.
“You can’t go out in that,” he growled at her, possession filtering into his voice.
She looked over her shoulder at him cheekily. “Why not? I came in this.”
A hint of a grin found his lips. “You weren’t wearing anything when you came.”
Amused—and turned on once again—Kate let him cross the space to her and cup her face in his hands. He leaned forward, but instead of the passionate, possessive kiss she had been expecting, he gave her a slow, gentle kiss.
Her eyes fluttered closed.
When he pulled back, he whispered, “I’ll let you go only if you promise me you’ll come back.”
Without even opening her eyes, she answered, “I promise.”
Kate ended up with one of Lucas’ sweaters thrown over her slinky red dress—it was actually longer. It was also incredibly soft and smelled of him. He stood at the door as she stepped onto the porch. She glanced back at him, giving him a small, tender smile and a wave. Lucas waved back, watching as she went to her car.
It wasn’t until she was sitting in the driver’s seat and had started the car that Lucas closed the door. As she drove away, Kate realized that she was being incredibly naïve. Her job wasn’t as secretary to Lucas Blaine, billion dollar corporate CEO. This wasn’t some office affair that might, given time and some real effort, work itself out. She was a reporter undercover, and trying to prove that Lucas Blaine was a corporate scumbag working with lowlife from around the world doing illegal deals and screwing families out of millions.
And she still had to write that expose. It was the only way to save her job. The only problem was, she was beginning to think she might be falling in love with the man she was trying to destroy.
“Shit.”
