He gave a huff of irritation. “Let us not think on that, shall we? It’s too distressing.”

  She laughed, because she knew he was teasing…but only partially.

  Her gaze roamed over the familiar fields, the trees she’d used to climb, and the stream where she used to swim. “I was a child when I left this place,” she said. “I was innocent and naïve and believed in things like fairy tales and happily ever afters.”

  He kissed the top of her head again as he murmured, “And then you grew up.”

  “Exactly.” She smiled up at him. “Now I know that some fairy tales do come true. And sometimes, if we’re very lucky, we get our happily ever after.”

  He laughed. “Well then, Miss Addie Adelaide. I suppose you and I are very lucky, indeed.”
