The Last Watchman of Old Cairo Page 23

by Michael David Lukas

For the time, space, and inspiration needed to write this book, enormous appreciation to: Montalvo Arts Center, Santa Maddalena Foundation, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Book Passage, Pizzaiolo, the Anne and Robert Cowan Writers Award, the Center for Middle East Studies at UC Berkeley, and the Geniza Research Unit at the University of Cambridge.

Thanks so much to everyone who read the book and supported me through the writing process: Anna Akullian, Rabih Alameddine, Rachel Brand, Maud Casey, Carolyn Cooke, John Engell, Mark Epstein, Danny Fingerman, Daniela Gerson, Rebecca Jefferson, Billy Karp, Reese Kwon, Ben Lavender, Krys Lee, Ben Outhwaite, Jeffrey Rotter, Melonie Schmeirer-Lee, Amy Smith, David Stein, Indira Stewart, Christina Toma, and Tristam Wolff. And special thanks to those stalwart souls who read more than one draft: Adam Akullian, David Akullian, Lillie Brum, Jonah Charney-Sirott, Kevin Fingerman, Joy Johannesen, and Reif Larsen.

Most of all, I would like to give thanks to and for the members of my little family: to Rashi for his endless love and excitement; to Mona for expanding the borders of my heartland, far beyond anything I could have imagined; and to Haley for everything, always.
