Delicate fingers curled over his shoulder and he turned, the ache in his chest increasing as he set eyes on her.
“What’s going on, Luke?”
With a shrug, he gave her a wan smile. “Just wanted to give you and your husband some space.” He failed to keep the sneer from his voice.
“You didn’t need to. I’d said everything that needed to be said.”
He thrust both hands in his pockets and kicked at a rock. “Guess you’ll be going then.”
“Not unless you want me to.”
Head snapping up, he frowned. “But you said you didn’t belong here. You said you weren’t a cowgirl.”
A smile blossomed across her face. “I’m not! But I’d like to learn to be one. If…” she glanced at her feet, “if you’d teach me.”
“You want to stay?” His heart soared, banging against his chest.
She looped her arms around his neck. “If you’ll have me.” Her dark eyes arrested him as she gazed up at him. “I’d like to be your cowgirl.”
“Oh I will definitely have you, darlin’. I’d like nothing more than for you to be my cowgirl.”
“And you can be my cowboy,” she said as she moved onto tiptoes and brushed her lips across his. “My dream cowboy,” she whispered.
He clutched her. “Hell, yeah, sweetheart.” He didn’t know what would happen for them next, but he would sure as hell do his best to fulfill her every dream. And he was pretty certain she’d do the same for him.
