Rachman, Stanley, and De Silva, Padmal. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: The Facts. New York: Oxford University Press, 1992.
(Simply written, good summary of what is known about the disorder.)
Rachman, Stanley, and Hodgson, Ray. Obsessions and Compulsions. New York: Prentice Hall, 1980.
(One of the best books ever written on OCD. Unfortunately, now somewhat dated.)
Rapoport, Judith. The Boy Who Couldn’t Stop Washing. New York: Dutton, 1989.
(The best-seller and a great overview on OCD. Although it is getting a little out of date, I still recommend it to patients because of the power of its case histories.)
Schwartz, Jeffrey. Brainlock. New York: Regan Books, 1996.
(An excellent self-help book; my patients like it.)
Steketee, Gail. Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. New York: Guilford Press, 1993.
(This is by far the best treatment manual for therapists who want to learn behavior therapy for OCD.)
Steketee, Gail, and White, Kerrin. When Once Is not Enough. Oakland, Calif.: New Harbinger, 1990.
(Another excellent self-help book, particularly for classic washing and checking rituals.)
Wegner, Daniel. White Bears and Other Unwanted Thoughts. New York: Penguin Books, 1989.
(Very readable and thought-provoking. Should be read by anyone interested in learning more about the psychological cause of obsessions.)
APPENDIX D
WHERE TO FIND HELP
HOW TO FIND A THERAPIST
The usual methods of finding qualified therapists, such as asking someone for a recommendation, do not necessarily work for OCD. The fact is that many psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers with excellent reputations have not kept up with the rapid advances in the understanding and treatment of this disorder. But there are two strategies for finding a good therapist that are almost foolproof.
The first is to call a teaching center, preferably a medical school’s department of psychiatry or a university’s department of psychology. Ask if they have a specialist in OCD, or, better yet, an OCD clinic. If they do, you can be reasonably assured of getting good treatment there.
If no teaching center is nearby, then the best bet is to call the OC Foundation, our national, nonprofit, nonpolitical, OCD advocacy group. The foundation has a top-notch scientific advisory board, and it keeps an up-to-date listing of OCD specialists and clinics throughout the world.

FINDING INFORMATION ON OCD
Two OCD centers carry books, articles, videos, and pamphlets on the disorder. The OC Foundation publishes a regular newsletter, sponsors numerous conferences, and has a large publication list. Every OCDer should join this national foundation and take advantage of its educational opportunities.
Another very helpful Obsessive-Compulsive resource is the Information Center, which has just about every book or article ever published on OCD. The librarians are extremely helpful.

FINDING HELP ON THE INTERNET
More than a dozen good OCD resource pages are to be found on the Internet. Two large sites have listings of other OCD web pages:
http://www.pages.prodigy.com/alwillen/ocf.html (home page of the Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation)
http://www.fairlite.com/ocd/ (a well-run bulletin board for OCD sufferers)
OCD SUPPORT GROUPS
There are more than two hundred active OCD groups in the United States and Canada. They are led by either OCDers or professional therapists. Most of these groups are primarily for support and discussion; some of them, particularly those that are professionally led, have a behavior therapy focus; and a few groups are part of Obsessive-Compulsive Anonymous, self-help for OCD that is based on the twelve-step model.
I believe that any of these groups can be extremely helpful. As noted in Chapter 6, OCDers tend to hide their disorder and to think that no one else in the world suffers from it. Group therapy is not infrequently the most important treatment that a person can find.
The OC Foundation maintains a master list of OCD support groups. At the time of this writing, early 1998, the following OCD groups were in operation.
