  “Tell me something.”

He watched her car close in on the planned detonation site. “The Cleaner is on your tail.”

“God. Tell me something I understand.”

  “Ten seconds.”

The car passed over the mark Ben preferred. She jerked the wheel and hit the gas, just like he’d told her. The car sailed out over the water.

“I love you,” he said as the car burst into flame. It was the first time he’d ever said those words....

The Cleaner slowed down and John saw him talking, though no one else was in the car. Then the deadly assassin sped away from the scene.

  Mission accomplished.

  Epilogue

  Hartford, Sunday December 22, 7:05 p.m.

“...In local news, Amelia Bennett, the popular and controversial reporter for The Torch died in a single car collision this morning when she lost control of a car on the Harvard Bridge. Police are investigating the incident due to recent threats against her life, but foul play is not suspected.”

From the edge of the motel room bed, John watched an image of Amelia go up beside a copy of the day’s Torch and her last article. Bernie had done a fine job with the layout.

“She didn’t live to see the swell of reader reactions to her latest story, a scathing report implicating Senator Larimore’s involvement with recent, malicious breaches of private information. According to both anonymous and confirmed sources, the senator regularly mined personal data and information which he then used to further his political career and agendas. Public outcry is...”

John hit mute. He didn’t need to hear the rest. Her story was out there. As Amelia had promised, it was national news and the momentum would carry it global as her source continued to leak information. Senator Larimore’s reign was over and not even his death would save his reputation. It appeared plenty of people were eager to come forward and expose the truth now that he couldn’t ruin them.

Amelia’s soft hand landed on his shoulder. Her hair was damp and her skin rosy from her shower. “I’m so grateful you managed to save us.”

He looked up into those sky-blue eyes, soft with affection. For him. He could live forever and not get enough of it. “You know how much I like it when you’re grateful.”

  “Me too.”

He pulled her onto his lap and gently kissed her bruised cheek. She had a couple additional scrapes and bruises from her escape from the car, but from the moment they’d fished her out of the water, she swore she was fine.

She’d certainly been smiling. He’d blamed it on the adrenaline, but it was still there.

“This won’t be an easy road,” he warned.

“We’ll be together,” she replied. “You can’t leave this undone.”

He looked at her, his Amelia, and wanted to laugh. Her constant quest for truth warmed him. He marveled at the sensation, still a bit stunned that she’d awakened parts of his soul he’d thought were far beyond dead.

“No.” He reached out, tracing the delicate shell of her ear. “We won’t leave it undone.”

“We?” Her eyes sparkled with anticipation.

“You have somewhere better to go?”

Her laughter rippled over him, through him. Instantly he wanted her, knew he would never stop wanting her. He wouldn’t leave it undone, but it would damn sure be more worthwhile with her by his side.

“I can promise you’ll never lack for a story.”

“And I can promise Bernie and I will find a way to get that story out to the public.”

God, they had a long way to go. It wouldn’t be a smooth or pretty ride, trying to outwit Gabriel and liberate the soldiers like Ben who existed from one unknown identity to the next and who wanted out. But for the first time in more years than he cared to count, John felt like his own man.

A man worthy of the remarkable, courageous woman at his side.
