I Will Remember You Page 24

They rode in silence for a while. Gianna cried. She was sick of crying. Maybe her tear ducts would dry up. She’d be better off. Beverly glanced her way occasionally but said nothing until they pulled into the garage.

“I used to be so jealous,” she said. “I felt like you were everything my mother always wanted me to be. But then you had Kaya and it clicked because Kaya was sweet and kind and thoughtful. Everything I always wanted you to be. And then I realized how selfish and arrogant it is to think that way in the first place.”

She turned the car off and turned to face Gianna. “I’m going inside. I’ll leave the keys. If you decide you wanna spend the rest of your life in jail, I’ll take care of your baby for you. But I suggest you get over it. I got over Robert. You can get over Tremaine.”

Gianna watched her mother go in the house. She briefly considered turning the car on and letting the fumes put her out of her misery but it would hurt Kaya too much. She picked up the keys and jiggled them back and forth, back and forth. She sat there for several minutes before finally getting out of the car. Tremaine would want her to be happy, and nobody was happy in jail.

  EPILOGUE

WILLIAMS PACED BACK and forth in the conference room. “You know as well as I do that she’s guilty.”

Debreaux scratched her chin. “Of course she is. You screwed up when you had her take that polygraph.”

“No, the polygraph was proper. I screwed up giving her back that fucking phone. She’s probably wiped it clean by now.” Williams had been beating himself up about that for the past few days.

“And there was nothing in her phone records?” Debreaux asked.

  “Not a damn thing.”

“And he won’t roll on her?”

“Nah, he’s sprung. He’ll never talk.”

  “Fuck.”

“Yeah. Fuck.” Williams stared at the bulletin board. Gianna’s picture was right smack in the middle. She was the key to everything. “I don’t care how long it takes. I’m gonna get her. I promise you that.”

Debreaux smiled. “Glad to hear it. So what’s the next move?”

Williams rubbed his hands together and decided to order some dinner. It was gonna be a long night.
