by Sarah Curtis
So I was today years old when I found out that Billy Joel wrote the song Shameless sung by Garth Brooks.
My first reaction was to wonder what the hell autocorrect was jumbling in the first part of that sentence. She informed me—after LOL at me—it’s a thing people say, like, I’ve lived this long and am just finding it out. Who knew?
My second reaction was… Huh, I didn’t know that either.
I love Billy Joel, so of course the first thing I did was look it up to see if he ever recorded a version of it. He did in 1989 on his album Storm Front.
I was a Garth Brooks fan back in the day so have heard the song Shameless too many times to count, but it had been years since I’ve listened to it. While watching Billy Joel’s version on YouTube, I started paying attention to the words. And that’s when I got the oh this is weird chill because the song could have been written for Colt. I swear every single word of that song fit him to a tee. So much so, I went back to my epilogue and changed what Ivy originally called Colt in the airport scene from incorrigible to shameless.
I swear, the timing of my daughter’s text couldn’t have been more perfect. A few months earlier and Colt’s character wouldn’t have been completely fleshed out and so the lyrics wouldn’t have been a blip on my radar. A few months later and, well, the book would’ve already been published.
So, I ask you this…
Was it coincidence or fate?
Shameless by Billy Joel
Author’s Note
I don’t know about you, but I have to admit to having a small girl-crush on Ivy. I can totally see why Colt fell in love with her because I did, too. Oz and Emerson will be up next in Tackle followed by Linc and his yet unknown to you heroine in Rush.
I would still be sitting at my keyboard with an unfinished book without the help from some very important people.
Christy: For holding my hand, keeping me sane, listening to all my rambles, helping me over the hurdles, and, most of all, for being my best friend.
Layla and Brynne: For all your help and support. I would not be the author I am today without the two of you. Thank you for having my back.
Carla: For slogging through the very rough first draft. Your patience is endless, and your insights are invaluable.
Colleen and Mindy: For taking the time to Beta read, thank you, thank you. You guys caught the little things I missed.
Heather: For being a good friend and always being there for second opinions.
My ARC readers: For ALL your support, I can’t thank you enough.
And for every one of the readers who are reading this, thank you for supporting this indie author. Without you, I couldn’t do what I love.
