“He can try. We are always going to know where he is and what he’s up to. That you can bet on.”
“I’m still scared of him.”
“That’s perfectly natural. It’s good to be scared. You won’t ever let your guard down, Betty Boxer.” He framed her face with his hands. “I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe. I promise you.”
While the fear didn’t completely disappear—she didn’t think it ever would—she did relax. She knew Royce and knew he meant what he said. And while he may be an actor who loved to joke around, that didn’t mean there wasn’t a dangerous quality underneath. He would do whatever it took to keep her safe.
She laid her head on his shoulder. “Thank you.”
“Anything for you.”
“Oh now, this is just . . . Heaven . . .” Hannah sighed as she settled down into the hot sand on the beach on the island one of Royce’s buddies, Lucky owned. She had never met the guy, but she had to admit, he had great taste as the, the tropical sun warmed her skin.
“You need more sunscreen,” Royce said as he grabbed the bottle.
“You just wanted another excuse to get your hands on me.”
“Can you blame me?”
“Nope. Go ahead if you must.”
“Oh, I must . . . I must . . .”
She giggled and sat up, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him down next to her. “I love you, Mr. Rivers.”
“And I love you, Mrs. Rivers.”
“When I was young, I used to wish on shooting stars.” She became serious. “Marc took that away from me. I wasn’t the carefree romantic anymore.” She touched the side of his face. “And then I met you and everything changed, something changed in me. I remember the night vividly. I was up late waiting for Will to come pay Lissa a surprise visit, and I needed to let him into the house. After he was settled in with her, I went out onto my balcony and looked at the stars. That was when I started wishing again. I looked up at them and wished for this, for us. And it came true.
“As we grew closer, my nightmares became more frequent, more than I’d had in the past five years. But you know something? Once I gave my heart totally to you, they stopped. He doesn’t have any power over me anymore, you do. You’re my heart and soul. You mean everything to me. Every day I am filled with such joy because of you, husband mine, such peace and hope for the future.
“All my life I’ve been searching for you, hoping for someone like you, and now that I’ve found you I’m never letting you go. You see, my wish has also come true.”

She lives with her husband and son in Arizona, which is a big difference from where she grew up north of Chicago, Illinois. As an only child she learned to tell herself stories to make the long winters go by quicker while dreaming of summer vacations. As an adult, she still makes up stories to pass the time, but now she writes them down to share with other people.
M. Stratton spends her days plotting new ways to surprise her readers. She eloped after knowing her husband for only two months in 2006; they welcomed their son right after Thanksgiving in 2007.
