After a minute he hit the button that would open the gate. The girl’s eyes flitted up. They found his.
Their gazes locked despite the glare.
Sylvain cursed and ruthlessly turned away. He’d been here alone for the better part of two years. The castle… it had evil in its walls.
All the old stories of the Alastairs were true.
He knew, because he’d experienced the shift in personality himself. He knew, because the source of it ebbed from the very heart of the accursed estate.
The castle had taken everything from him. His sister, his mother. Even his father—who, truly, Sylvain could not miss.
The serving girl, too. The one he’d impregnated what seemed like a decade ago.
Their child.
A stab of pain pierced Sylvain’s heart. He cast it aside with a grimace. All the associations, all the feelings, all the emotions, all the thoughts…
He could not give way to them now.
He felt that dark ball of anger pulsing in the back of his mind. It was larger than it had ever been before.
Good. He needed to keep it that way. Never ever would he allow himself to forget his anger, and his infinite hatred.
He refused to think of the serving girl by name. She was gone. And this little one… the one coming into his domain with absolutely no idea of what waited for her… she would be the object to occupy his time now.
