  Book Description

  Prologue

The ship’s passage between the stars would soon end. There was a lot of tension and excitement on the bridge, but the one in the center felt a modicum of caution. He was slightly unusual for his race in that way, but as he was over eight feet tall and had defended his post as captain time and time again, most knew better to challenge his decisions.

Most, that is. There was always one in each batch of new crewman he’d have to make an example of. He suspected that moment was about to be now, since his gunner had that itchy look on his face for the last few weeks of their long two-year voyage. The Mateera hadn’t heard from their fumigation warships in quite some time. The last report he was cognizant of was received twenty years ago, and the ugly humanoid race on the third planet in the system was in the first stages of fumigation. Much of their population had been destroyed in anticipation of both moving their species in and starting to mine the resources of the solar system.

Planets that supported life were very rare. The reports had also shown the intelligent species weren’t in space, or much more advanced than in simple nuclear physics. The logical conclusion was that the three captains had decided to go pirate, rape as much of the world as they could to fill their limited in comparison but not inconsiderable holds, and then possibly went their own way.

  Deserting the empire’s fleet.

But something in his gut told him the explanation wasn’t that simple.

Captain Rohen of the Mateeran ship Razor ordered, “Drop out of FTL at thirty light seconds distance from the planet, I want to get a good look at it before we move in.”

The gunner stiffened and turned, and Rohen almost rolled his eyes. The young of his race could be so predictable. He switched on the recorder, so all the other newbies could witness this fool’s fall.

“Captain! The other colony ships will have an advantage! I name you a coward, and unfit to lead a true Mateeran.”

Captain Rohen moved quickly and powerfully but also with the grace and experience of old age and cunning. He was also still close enough to his prime century, that his strength hadn’t yet begun to fade. The stupid gunner met his lunge and managed to block the captain’s kick and elbow to the face, but not the dagger concealed in his lower right fist that opened up the idiot’s body from groin to upper chest.

He growled, “Anyone else have a problem with my orders?” as the gunner’s guts fell to the deck just seconds before his body followed.

The rest of the bridge promptly yelled, “No, sir!”

Rohen snarled, “Then carry out my orders.”

He was still snarling when he closed the recording channel, then he leaned back in his chair and yawned. The old warriors on the bridge who trusted his sometimes strange orders, for it had protected their lives far too many times, laughed uproariously.

The newbies must be shitting themselves down there.

“Dropping out of FTL now, sir.”

The captain ordered, “Full scan as quickly as possible. We don’t want to give everyone else too much of a head start, after all.”

The screen filled with the blue, green, and white planet seen from a distance, and the captain launched to his feet, as less than a second later three of the eight other ships in the fleet went critical and exploded. He’d seen a runaway reactor explosion enough times to recognize it when he saw it, there was no mistaking that for enemy fire.

He barked, “What just happened! Where are the other five ships?”

The screen had the three explosions, but it didn’t show any of the other five ships, which for the moment seemed more concerning. What the hell just happened?

The science officer said, “Sir, the five ships have completely lost power, that’s why they’re not reporting on the data net,” the five ships and their projected crash courses appeared on the screen. It looked like one would hit the largest body of water, while two hit the landmass to the right of it, and the other two the landmass to the left of it, “I’m not reading anything on the ships at all, not even residual particle decay from their reactors. Which should be impossible, sir.”

  “What’s causing it?”

The science officer didn’t answer for a moment, and then said, “Some strange energy field around the planet sir, seems effective out to two light seconds. There doesn’t seem to be a source sir, the field pattern is both uniform and complete, rather like a gravity field. I can’t say what it is sir, but whatever it is it interacts on the sub-quantum level. It doesn’t match any known energy in our database.”

The science officer stiffened, “Sir, I’ve also found the wreckage of one of the fumigation warships, it seems likely they were taken down the same way, perhaps the other two were destroyed? Whatever the field is, it’s obviously suicide to approach the planet.”

The tactical officer asked angrily, “Should we destroy it sir?”

Rohen lifted an eyebrow, “The planet? A reasonable question given the planet just destroyed a major fleet. Maybe, but not yet, and certainly not at my authority. That’s a question for admirals to decide. Some of the crews may get off in jump packs, and there’s a chance they can still form a colony, perhaps even remove the infesting life. I want full scans done, detailed, while we wait to see how many of our people from those five ships survive. If they do survive, I suspect we’ll be ordered to leave and recheck in twenty years. Life bearing planets are rare, after all.”

He’d never heard of sub-quantum shielding, but it wouldn’t hurt to give the scientists a crack at the data, perhaps the next ships they sent could be protected from the phenomenon.

“How sure are you it’s not the… human infestation doing it with some technology? A pinpoint strike with our weapons could take out a small area even from this distance.”

The science officer said, “Very sure, sir. The field appears to disrupt all high-technology, they’re living in a pretechnological state. The most advanced technology I’m seeing on the planet is a steam engine. Their populations have also been severely curtailed from our first ship’s visit, from seven billion to perhaps a little over two hundred million worldwide. It seems to be a natural field unique to this world perhaps?”

He grunted, “Sub-quantum field… that would be highly malleable to intelligent thought and focused desires, wouldn’t it?”

  The science off
icer slowly nodded, “In theory, sir. If they were evolved enough, but such theories remain unproven. I’m also picking up several secondary species, with much smaller populations that didn’t exist in the initial scans.”

He nodded, “Just get the detailed scans, and get them ready for transmission with the report of what happened to the ships. If I need to know a detail, I’ll ask. Unless you think it’s truly significant to the safety of this ship, save it for the report.”

The science officer flushed, “Yes, sir.”

He felt angry about what was happening down there, but also rather smug that he’d guessed right again. Prudence wasn’t always cowardice, after all.

The door slammed behind her as she ran through the underground complex of her home. Katie whole body itched, and she felt like it was pulling her in several different directions at once. She’d been the bearer of the mantel of balance, and a servant of Gaia for just over twenty-three years. She was in truth, forty-five years old, but didn’t look a day older than twenty-six thanks to her slow aging as a sorceress, as well as Sean’s generosity in returning her youth eighteen years ago now.

She was still alone, and she wondered if she always would be. She couldn’t even remember the last time she’d had a cock between her legs, it must’ve been eighteen years now, since she’d had to give John the boot. Unlike her protector, companion, and best friend, a silver dragon named Bria, she wasn’t into casual sex at all. She just hadn’t been able to find a man that was both confident and strong, alluring to her sexually and personality wise, that also wouldn’t try to run her life. She was the bearer, and strong men didn’t usually like a woman that wouldn’t yield to their supposed wisdom.

When the fate of the balance was on the line, she didn’t have time to argue. She needed her orders to be followed and done so immediately once she’d made her decision. She didn’t mind suggestions, but when the time came for action she was in charge and didn’t have time for a male throwing a hissy fit because they thought she was stupid, or theirs to order about.

At the same time, she wanted a man that would sweep her off of her feet, and to challenge her and even be lovingly possessive in the rest of her life. A man that would take charge in the bedroom, and make her knees turn weak. She was still a woman, and she wanted a strong man. She just had to have both, because half her life, her purpose, was about being in charge of maintaining the balance on this world.

But it was ultimately all her responsibility. The idea of mating with a weak man, one that would let her run her stuff and also run all over him in their personal lives, turned her off badly too. So… she was alone, and she probably always would be. The traits she needed in a lover and mate were… impossible.

She’d even considered the whole sharing idea, if the right man came along. Bria’s arguments for it the last twenty years had been rather persuasive, and she was older and wiser than she’d been in her youth. She was often distracted with teaching or studying, or off saving the balance, any man she found with the right traits would need a distraction as well. As long as it was all in the open, and honest, she thought she could deal with it. As long as there was love between them, though she’d never be sharing a woman.

But it was all so… unrealistic, what she needed.

So, like Merlin before her, she was a loner. She’d… even sort of gotten used to it, and while not perfect the magically enchanted vibrating dildo she’d made did the job of at least pure physical relief.

“Bria! We’re in deep shit!” she yelled down the hallway. She hadn’t been this panicked in years.

Bria opened her door just a second before she stopped short in front of the dragon’s quarters. She blushed, as she saw a very buff man behind Bria, just his muscled chest and golden hair as well as his chiseled face in view. The rest of their no doubt naked bodies were behind the mostly closed door. Not that Bria was at all modest. The dragon was only doing so out of respect to Katie’s more human sensibilities about nudity.

She hadn’t known Bria had a gold dragon as a guest and booty call. She’d learned over the years to pay attention to what was important in her generously sized field of magical detection, but Bria’s room had a privacy ward on it. She still couldn’t feel their magical presence even at three feet away through the threshold of the doorway.

  Bria said, “What’s wrong?”

She grimaced, “You know how Dawn and the elven seers have been predicting the return of the aliens for the last year? I’m pretty sure they’re here, five ships this time, and all pulling me in different directions, and all of them are imminent threats.”

Bria sighed playfully, “So, booty call’s over then?”

She laughed despite herself, “Yes, evil dragon.”

Bria winked, “We’ll handle it, bearer. Any idea where they’re coming down?”

She frowned and closed her eyes.

“California and Texas, or maybe Louisiana for the latter one, somewhere near the gulf. The third closest ship, now that I’m concentrating on it the danger is very low. They’re coming down in the middle of the Pacific, and I suspect they’ll all probably drown. The other two are hitting the east coast of China and… northwest china, or perhaps southern Russia.”

She’d come a long way the last twenty years, in estimating the pull as far as distance.

  Bria nodded, “So…”

She snorted, “Right, I’ll let Sean and the emperor handle two. We’ll go to Louisiana, and if still necessary Russia afterwards. It just… feels bad. I think these ships are bigger, there’s going to be a lot more than few hundred this time.”

Bria shrugged, “You’re not a newbie this time. You’re even pretty damn good with a staff, I have to try to win nowadays.”

The gold dragon said, “I’ll let the council know what’s going on, although they probably know already.”

Bria smiled, and kissed him, “Thanks Lian. Drop by again anytime, this one won’t play with me.”

Katie blushed. Bria was gorgeous of course, she just didn’t play with women. She was about as hetero as any woman could be. it wasn’t a judgement thing, she lived and let live, women just… didn’t do anything for her libido.

Bria said, “You might want to see if anyone wants to help. Sean will have his hands full with their ship of course, but the guy’s worn down his women with a village sized family the last twenty years.”

She laughed at the worn down description, since they all still looked like late teens or early twenties, “I will. I suppose a couple of them are old enough now. I haven’t seen them in years.”

She’d trained a couple of Sean’s sorcerous kids from the ages of twelve to fifteen, his oldest son Ryan would almost be nineteen, and would be a help in battle. Though, their last meeting had been a little awkward, but she was over it, and it was four years ago now since the… incident.

She started casting the communication spell, Cassie first, then the emperor’s contact. Northern China or southern Russia, there was no one really near there that she knew of that could face the threat, they could hit them second if they had to. She’d certainly know, since she’d still feel the pull if that was the case. There’d be a cost in the delay of course, but she could only do one thing at a time.

She just hoped if they did fight them off, that the aliens would finally decide Earth wasn’t worth the effort. It wasn’t like they could get out into space and take the war to them, after all.

  Chapter One

The small bedroom felt hot as his hammering heart slowed in his chest. He had a sheen of sweat over his whole body as he got up and slipped into the waiting bath water. It was hot, and it felt good on his skin as he started to soap up. The lovely and sumptuous young blonde woman that he’d just slept with slipped into a robe, took the coin on the side table, and left the room without a look back.

Ryan sighed. The sex had been incredible, but as usual he felt a little empty after finding that relief in a whorehouse. He had needs though, and he wasn’t in any relationships at the
moment.

He was somewhere in Ohio he thought. He’d moved around a lot the last year, after he’d turned eighteen and had left home. He kept in touch with his family of course, via communication spell. He even missed his seven parents and nineteen siblings at times, many of them still very young. The second oldest siblings, two sisters, were both life sorceresses. He also had a few half brothers and sisters that were priests and priestesses. Although he didn’t think of them any less than his full siblings, the sons and daughters of Mara and Lori.

His birth mother Cassie and his father had two more children beside him, who were young. One was a life sorcerer, the other a nature sorcerer. The rest of his family was like that as well, either a priest or life sorcerer, or one thing from their parents.

He was the only freak in the family, who’d inherited both his father’s and mother’s power. He was a hybrid sorcerer, a life and nature sorcerer, able to discern both the magic and life around him, and control either. His training had been rather intense as he’d grown up, and a lot of that had been on morality and control. There were a lot of leverages and synergies between the two magics only he could take advantage of.

At eighteen, he’d set off on his own for several reasons.

His father had built a territory right after emergence, when everything was fractured and wrong. After twenty years most areas were back to somewhat normal society if pre-technological. Point was, he had to make his way in a different way. He couldn’t follow in his father’s footsteps unless he was willing to conquer established and flourishing communities, which really wasn’t an option in his mind. Still, there were enough raiders and bad people left around to make his mark. To make the places he passed through a little safer, it’s what he’d been doing the last year, growing his life force reservoir, by as his father always said, taking out the trash.

Well, he was mostly on his own.

The door opened a few seconds after the cute blonde whore left, and a willowy redhead walked in the room. She was stunningly and mischievously beautiful, and she had been ever since he could remember. Forever eighteen, and now forever his. She had long gorgeous and fulminous bright red hair, piercing green eyes, and a very light skin tone. Her face was thin, cheekbones high and defined, with full lips and a button nose. She would’ve simply been stunningly beautiful, but the mischievousness of her looks stemmed from the smattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose, and the playful smirk that often graced her face. Her body was lithe and athletic, toned like a dancer at five foot seven. She had lovely rounded B cups, a heart shaped ass, and a gently and alluringly curved thin waist. Her femininely sculpted and long legs were simply mouthwatering, and the way she moved was so graceful it would draw most men’s eyes.
