“Evelyn, please… say something.”
“Come take my hand, Duncan. We can make love only one time before we must go.”
Duncan stepped forward from her tomb and reached for her hand in the darkness. She took hold of it, gently, and led him into the room behind her. A single light in the room shined on a tall stone that appeared to be used for corpse preparations.
He could see the outline of her body and he could not fight his instincts any longer. He pulled Evelyn close to him in the dark and embraced her. Her clothes were torn and dusty.
They kissed while the pale moonlight shone in from under the door behind them. The light over the slab dimmed out and Duncan carefully laid Evelyn down on it. He gently lowered himself on top of her, still fully clothed. He kissed her cheeks and lips, never knowing of a time when had wanted someone so intensely. His only thoughts were how he could make her feel as comfortable and safe as possible.
“Stay with me, my love,” Evelyn said.
Duncan looked into her eyes as a shimmer of the moonlight reflected off her watery irises. He lay beside her with one leg over her waist.
“I will stay Evelyn. I will stay with you forever. You will never be alone again.”
She kindly put her fingers on his cheek and when his eyes adjusted to the light, he could see that she had been long since deceased, a living version of her post-mortem body.
“Only you can make me truly happy.”
Duncan did not care if she was a living corpse. He carefully placed his arm under Evelyn’s head and she embraced him across his chest.
Evelyn and Duncan lay peacefully inside the tomb that was marked:
