Be brave.
Allison has always had a crush on her boss. Big guy Christopher Monster doesn't quite fit his name. Other people are scared of him, but Allison thinks he's sweet, kind, and wildly intelligent.
Too bad he's never looked twice at her.
When a new project manager joins their team at Monster Brothers Security, strange things start happening around the office.
Is somebody trying to hack their system?
Will Allison be able to stop them?
More importantly, will she be able to do it without betraying Christopher's trust?
For every girl who has ever dared
to love.
Chapter 1
"Lunch for two?"
A friendly voice sounded from Christopher's office doorway, and he grinned when he looked up and saw that it was Allison. The beautiful human was one of the most important people to work at his office. Seeing her always brought a smile to his face.
She made his cock happy, too.
It twitched, reminding Christopher that she was gorgeous and sassy and hot as hell, but he took a deep breath and reminded himself to stay cool. Allison was his assistant: not his bedmate. Not that he’d mind if she wanted to upgrade her current job title.
"I'd love lunch," he managed to say.
"Good," she walked into the room and dropped a bento box on the counter. The smell of the food wafted right up to Christopher’s nose, and he sniffed appreciatively. She always managed to choose foods that were tasty as hell. "Because I brought us something good."
"What is it?"
She raised an eyebrow.
"Ha-ha, very funny. I know you can smell it, dragon. Just open it up and eat."
She grabbed one of the chairs in front of his desk and scooted closer, making herself at home. He liked this about Allison. She was never nervous around him and she was never awkward or weird about the fact that he was a shifter.
She just liked being around him, and he liked her so much more than he should have.
“Is it cake?”
“No.”
“Is it applesauce?”
“No!”
“Hmm,” Christopher tapped his chin.
“Dragon, I mean it,” Allison looked up at him. She licked her lips. “Open the box. Eat the food.”
Christopher would do just about anything to have those gorgeous lips wrapped around his cock. That was what he wanted more than anything else in the world. If Allison melted to her knees in front of him and just started worshipping his damn dick, then he would be the happiest shifter on the planet.
He knew perfectly well that this could never happen, though. There were certain rules ab
out dating in the workplace. You weren’t supposed to date your employees, and you weren’t supposed to date people you managed, and you weren’t supposed to date beautiful, soft humans who could take your breath away.
You just weren’t.
“You know, I’m the owner of this company, but you sound like you’re the boss,” Christopher winked at Allison.
“You like being bossed around sometimes,” she murmured quietly.
“Only by you, Allison.”
Allison was everything that Christopher’s ex-girlfriend hadn’t been. While Monique had been sharp edges and bitter words, Allison was soft and comforting. Everything that came out of her mouth was calming to Christopher, and everything she had to say made him feel like he was important to her. He liked that. He loved feeling like he was good for her. She was definitely good for him.
And these lunch dates were something he was starting to crave.
If he was being honest, he was starting to crave her.
“It certainly smells good,” Christopher opened the bento and started eating. Rice, meat, and vegetables topped with a tasty sauce? Yeah, he liked it. Allison did, too.
“It’s my new favorite thing,” she told him.
You’re my new favorite thing.
He didn’t say it.
He wanted to, and it was on the tip of his tongue, but he couldn’t. Wouldn’t. He knew it was wrong. He understood that. He knew trying to tell her that he was wildly in love with her would only complicate things at work.
“I’m glad you like it,” Christopher said demurely. Oh, he sounded like a total piece of shit. Who talked like that?
Allison didn’t seem to notice him being awkward, though. She practically inhaled her food. That was another thing he liked about her. She didn’t hold back when it came to food. Too many humans were nervous about their eating habits. Christopher often felt like women especially were nervous about eating too much. He just thought you should eat until you felt satisfied. Apparently, Allison had the same idea.
“So, the new project manager is here,” Allison looked up, blinking.
“James?”
“Yeah, he’s going to be working on the software systems and helping us work out the kinks before production and distribution begins.”
Christopher wanted to get kinky with Allison. That was such a good, naughty word. It was delicious. She was delicious. He wanted to spread her out on his bed like a damn dessert and just start licking her over and over and over.
“That’s nice,” Christopher managed to say. His mouth felt dry, and his cock felt hard, and he thought he was going to explode if he didn’t kiss her soon. He wanted to kiss her so very badly.
“He’s not too bad,” Allison murmured, taking another bite of her meal.
Christopher tried to read her face to figure out how she actually felt about the new guy. Was she being polite? Was he a good fit? It wasn’t often that they brought in new people to work at Monster Brothers Security. Christopher and his brothers worked hard to make sure they cultivated a wonderful work environment. They prided themselves on creating an inclusive workplace where their employees would want to stay.
“How’s integration going?” Christopher asked Allison. What he wanted to ask was whether she’d come home with him. Fuck, he was insane. He had the world’s biggest and most horrible crush on Allison, of all people, and she had no idea he felt this way.
“Good,” she nodded and shrugged. Christopher was a little surprised that she didn’t sound more enthusiastic. Usually, she was bubbling over with energy. She was easily excitable.
“Good?”
“Everything’s been smooth so far. I got James up to speed this morning. He seems to be making himself comfortable around the office,” Allison explained.
She reached for a bottle of water on Christopher’s desk and opened it. Then she took a sip. When she set the bottle down, there was still a drop of water on her bottom lip. Christopher wanted to flick his tongue out and swipe it over her mouth.
“Always a good thing,” Christopher agreed carefully, trying to stay calm and collected.
Fuck, she was beautiful.
“Yeah, I guess.”
While he was delighted to be having lunch with the sweet little human, Christopher was also a little bit concerned. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Allison didn’t sound entirely thrilled about James. He hoped the new team member wasn’t going to give anyone trouble or step on any toes.
Bringing new people into an office was never really simple. When you hired someone new, especially if they were going to be in a leadership position, integration could be tricky, to say the least.
“I hope he isn’t giving you a hard time.”
“Nothing I can’t handle.”
“If you need anything, Allison, you ask me,” Christopher said.
“I know,” she smiled.
“I mean it. Monster Brothers wouldn’t be what it is without you.”
He hadn’t meant to say that. Now that the words were out, though, he wouldn’t take them back. It was the truth. Christopher and his brothers owed a lot to Allison. She’d done a lot for their company. She’d done a lot for all of them.
Christopher and his brothers ran a security firm called Monster Brothers Security. They were the Monster brothers: Brian, Christopher, and Declan Monster. The three of them combined into a deadly dragon force. At least, Christopher liked to think that way.
“That’s very kind of you,” she said, “but I think that you all were doing just fine on Sapphire Island before I came along.”
“That’s not true at all.”
“Dragon shifters are pretty resilient,” Allison smiled. “I know that you all like to pretend to be helpless, but I know you were just fine looking after yourselves before I came along.”
Christopher grinned and shook his head. She was right when she said they were dragon shifters living on Sapphire Island. Their world was a beautiful one, and the dragon brothers did a lot on their own, but they were busy – very busy – and they were constantly scrambling around. Allison had helped streamline their lives in more ways than she’d probably ever know.
“You make my life easier, Allison. You’re a hero in my book.”
“Thanks,” she whispered, smiling softly.
Christopher took another bite of his food. He and his brothers really had been overwhelmingly busy lately. Declan’s life was especially hectic as of late because he was now enamored with his newfound mate. Zoa was sweet and wonderful and completely perfect for him.
Brian and Christopher were both wildly jealous of him, but unlike Brian, Christopher held out hope that he’d find someone to be his mate one day. Brian was just an old grouch who didn’t really believe in love, but Christopher did. One day, he’d find someone who loved him for him. He’d find someone who swept him off his dragon feet.
One day.
“What about you?” Allison asked gently, pulling Christopher back to their conversation.
“What about me?”
“What have you been up to today?”
“Oh,” Christopher smiled at her. Fuck, she was gorgeous. She had soft skin and beautiful hair that bounced when she moved her head. Her lips were parted just the slightest bit, and she looked so damn kissable that it hurt. “Nothing much. I replied to emails. I scheduled appointments. I even handled a couple of minor computer problems.”
“Sounds busy.”
“Annoyingly so,” he sighed.
“You wish you were working on the new software, don’t you?” Allison chuckled, looking up at Christopher.
When she smiled at him like that, it felt like his heart was going to explode. Why-oh-why couldn’t she just be ugly? Or terrible? Why couldn’t she be a mean old witch with nothing good about her?
He sighed. Why did she have to be perfect? It simply wasn’t fair. Christopher didn’t need a relationship. He definitely didn’t need a relationship with someone soft and sweet like Allison. She was charming and cute and...h
e was slightly obsessed. She was off-limits, though.
They both knew it.
Everyone knew it.
“Yeah, I wish I was. It’s almost done, and I want it to be out by Christmas.”
“You don’t have much time to waste, dragon man.”
“Hey, I told you to call me handsome man,” he joked.
“I can call you that, if you like,” Allison’s eyes twinkled. She opened her mouth and whispered the words he’d been longing to hear: “Handsome man.”
It was a good thing he was sitting on the opposite side of the desk. If he’d been on the other side, close to Allison, she would have seen his cock hardening. There would be no way to miss it. As it was, Christopher was relieved that Allison could only imagine his cock. That is, if she wanted to, of course.
“Very nice,” he managed to choke out. He shoved another bite of rice into his mouth to avoid having to speak again for a minute. He needed to collect himself. Why the hell did he always let this happen? Somehow, when he was with Allison, he seemed to completely lose himself. Nothing else mattered. He found himself thinking about her, dreaming about her, and fantasizing about her.
She was just...Allison.
“So, do you have a date for the office party?” Allison looked back up at him. He shoved another bite of rice into his mouth before she’d finished her sentence, so he had a chance to think about what he wanted to say.
Office party?
He’d forgotten about that.
The holiday party was an unforgettable one. Brian and Declan really went all out with the Christmas stuff. They lived for that crap. Christopher could take it or leave it. He didn’t date often. At least, he hadn’t since Monique. She’d really ruined relationships for him on every level, but she’d also ruined Christmas.
Last year, during the worst part of their relationship, she’d actually taken the gift he’d carefully chosen for her, and she’d thrown it across Declan’s treehouse. They’d all been there together celebrating the holiday, and she’d not only insulted him, but completely humiliated him in front of his brothers.
So, did Christopher have a date for the office party?
No.
