I sent, “How are artifacts destroyed?”
He thought, “Another artifact, an active volcano.”
That was really not helpful at all.
I replied, “I can’t set off a volcano, and I’m fresh out of artifacts, try to delay him. I’m going to try to destroy the heart, I’m being blocked, but maybe that part of the protections are general and weak?”
He seemed dubious about that, but started to speak to the lich as I pushed hard against the artifact with my mind. Maybe I was the one that could destroy it, because I wasn’t from this world, but that didn’t mean it would be easy, did it?
I didn’t want to destroy the actual artifact anyway, just what it contained. The lich’s heart to end the threat.
“Why destroy everything? Who will you talk to then?”
I almost giggled at his question, but kept my concentration on the artifact. It felt like I was trying to break a cinder block with a pebble, but I wasn’t going to give up.
The lich rolled his eyes, “You’re an imbecile, I changed my mind.”
And then all the undead in the room attacked.
I used my telekinesis with my sword, and was still pushing on the artifact at the same time. It was a strain and I was draining fast with the amount of mental power I was using. If I was wrong, we’d have to run quickly.
Gerald stepped in front of me and protected me from the charging undead. I killed a few more, and then sent my new sword at the rock, tip first and very quickly.
The sword hit the artifact, which quivered under the assault, but did not break. Still, the holy aura on the sword fought the dark magic, diminished it slightly, and I punched through with my mind. With a thought I shredded the lich’s heart.
The scream was horrifying, and I got the idea that I’d be having nightmares about it for years to come, but a few seconds later, the Lich fell to the ground in true death, and so did all his minions…
I collapsed back on my ass with a smile on my face, the damned thing was actually dead. The sense of corruption and evil started to fade as well, despite the artifact remaining whole, and I could feel my goddess’s presence again. I wondered if maybe the lich had twisted the true purpose of the artifact, but didn’t know what that was.
“I think I’ll sleep for a week.”
He smiled, “That sounds good, I still have like a month and almost three weeks of vacation left.”
I laughed, and stood up.
We checked the place out, a girl had needs after all, so I had to get paid. The four rooms in the hallway were old laboratories, with nothing worth taking, and the gold and treasures on the first sub floor were all gone when we went up the stairs. It must have been some kind of illusion, or trap. It was frustrating, there didn’t seem to be anything of worth to take in the whole castle.
Gerard sighed, “At least were set on money.”
I raised an eyebrow in confusion and said, “There’s nothing here.”
He laughed and when I glared he held up a hand in apology.
He explained, “Mages would spend a fortune for one small obsidian gem, they are highly sought after for the magic they can enhance and store.”
My eyes widened, as we were standing in a whole structure of the stuff.
We took some time to break off a number of pieces, and stuffed them in our packs, we’d have to have a jeweler cut them into gems, but apparently I wasn’t going to have to worry about gold ever again. I could also come back here, although I doubted we’d have too. I knew I’d make coin in other ways as well, and I wasn’t that enamored of having riches anyway.
We went back out, careful to avoid the traps, even though the undead were dead again, and got our horses.
Before we mounted I said, “Hold on, I want to try something.”
I took his hand, and held Stormy, while Gerard was holding his horse. I tried to teleport us back to Magehaven. I knew I could do it, but it wouldn’t work. I was intimidated by taking the horses, and just how far away it was. I was conflicted, and it wasn’t working, which annoyed me.
“Kiss me,” I demanded softly.
He smiled, and being the good man he was didn’t ask any questions. He just kissed me passionately.
It curled my toes.
I heard someone clear their throat loudly, and opened my eyes. Wow, it worked. It not only worked, I was surprised exactly where I’d ended up, because I was thinking of home.
Chapter 20
Danielle said with a small smile, “Now that was a hell of an entrance girl.”
I giggled, “Hi Danielle, sorry about this.”
We were kind of dusty, dirty, and we were also in the temple of Arella.
I added, “I don’t suppose you’d marry us? As long as were here and all…” I trailed off hopefully.
Danielle looked at Gerard, “Relax, you were taken here, so there is no fault or blame for your presence here,” she looked at me, “I’d be happy too, if it meets Gerard’s approval.”
Gerard nodded slowly, “We should get married twice though.”
I laughed, “Fine, I wouldn’t mind two blessings on our match if we can get them.”
Gerard said, “Perhaps we should clean up first, maybe report to the castle? We can come back tomorrow.”
I sighed, “I guess, but if you run I’ll hunt you down.”
I was joking when I said it, but I also meant every word of it.
Gerard smiled and caressed my cheek, “No fear of that.”
“Fine, I guess I’d rather be clean, and in a dress instead of this armor. Danielle, I need classes, can we do that?”
Danielle laughed, “Sure, I was going to mention it, but after the wedding.”
I nodded, “Probably tomorrow, I’m sure the king will want a debrief too.”
She smiled and waved us out, and I sighed.
I grabbed Gerard, and the second time it was much easier since I was more than positive I could do it, and we appeared right outside of the royal stables. We had a lot to do, clean up, sell the obsidian, brief the king, get married, and I had stuff to learn about my new world and my goddess. Not necessarily in that order. Oh, and a honeymoon. Definitely one of those…
