Knight in Tattooed Armor: International Billionaires XII: The Latinos Page 36

“I know.” The words were muffled in his fur, and didn’t sound sincere, in Jiggs’ opinion.

“Come here.” His girl pulled the Little One into her arms.

While he liked to be hugged, it was warm with a human in his bed.

  He woofed in appreciation.

But the two humans had their heads together, one intense, the other pouting.

“Does it seem like your daddy and I don’t love Jiggs anymore?”

“What?” The Little One’s head shot up, a crease on her forehead. “Of course not. Sometimes we all think you like him the best.”

“Well, he is a dog,” his girl said, her tone wry. “Who doesn’t like a dog the best?”

Another woof came from him, this one of agreement.

  Both humans chuckled.

“But there’s a point, here, Mari.”

  “What is it?”

“Do you think we’ll love Jiggs less when this new baby comes?”

The crease on the small brow furrowed in deep thought. “No, not if you loved him just as much after we all came.”

His girl didn’t say anything more.

Not only doggie wisdom pervaded this island.

“Oh,” the Little One said, sitting straight in her mommy’s lap. “I see. I’m like Jiggs.”

  “Not exactly.”

He understood. Not every being on this island could take a nap while at the same time keep an eye on the surroundings. Not every being could sneak into the ocean time and time again. And not everyone could manage to eat the dropping food on the floor without being detected by his guy.

His guy ambled up to stand, looking down at all three of them. “Problem?”

“No, Daddy.” The Little One jumped up and hopped to his side. “Mommy explained it all using Jiggs.”

His guy’s brows rose. “What does that mean?”

It meant that Jiggs was the center of this family. And that’s just how he wanted it.

With a sigh of contentment, he used the humans’ distraction with each other. Rising to his elegant legs, he took off for the water.

  “Jiggs!” his guy roared.

  Acknowledgments

I appreciate every bit of advice and commentary that I've received from numerous critique group buddies, workshops, classes, and beta readers. After years of honing my craft, I still find new and important nuggets of wisdom every time I put my writing out there for review.

Thanks to my developmental editor, Allie Burton, who is truly my conscience and calls me on my idiot imaginings. Thanks to Sue Viders, who always catches when a character has moved across the room, but I haven't mentioned it. And thanks to Tanya Saari, my proofreader, who diligently goes with me into the correct way to spell numerous foreign foods and phrases.

Finally, thanks to my family, who taught me to love books and appreciate a story well-told.
