Elsie giggled even as the tears ran down her face. “Yes, Sam. Nothing would make me happier.”
Dawdi slowly lowered the paper he was reading as if he wasn’t quite sure he’d just heard what he thought he heard.
With the most adorable look of shock on her face, Mammi clutched her bosom and swayed back and forth as if she might topple over. Elsie yanked away from Sam’s grasp and led Mammi to the nearest kitchen chair. Dawdi got up from his recliner as fast as he could and took one of Mammi’s arms. “Are you all right?”
“That’s the fastest match I ever made,” she said breathlessly. “I never knew I had it in me.”
Sam smiled at Elsie as if she was both his heaven and his earth. Her heart skipped about five beats. “I’d really like to take you on that buggy ride now,” he said.
Elsie put on her jacket, grabbed an umbrella from the hook, and gave Mammi a peck on the cheek. “I love you, Mammi.”
“I love you, dear,” Mammi said, still a little dazed.
“Will you be okay if I go for a ride with Sam?”
Mammi nodded. “Of course. Of course. You should get to know each other before the wedding.”
Elsie turned and smiled at Sam. He had no idea how happy he’d just made her.
As soon as she got in that buggy, she was going to kiss him.
And then pinch his ear.
