Tribal Dawn: Mordufa: Volume Three Page 35

“You don’t seem happy with what they’ve said,” Nuru muttered, slurping the dregs of the broth.

Vakaar cleared his throat and rubbed his mouth. “It wasn’t something I wanted to hear.” He tapped his hands on the table. “But it gives us a reason to go there straight away. Tonight, you’ll stay in your cell. Tomorrow morning, we’ll depart and see if you have what it takes to be part of our brethren.” Vakaar stood hastily and spun around. “I almost forgot. Before training, you need the name of one person who you will end. Call it a life for a life under Mordufa’s eye. He needs a sacrifice.”

There was no one else that was more deserving of a dagger in the back. For the pain he put his mother through, the tortures of her blood and the suffering of his sister: “My father.”

Vakaar smirked. “Very well. Jiti will take you back to your cell when you’re done. I need to prepare for our trip. Welcome to the Silent-step, Nuru.”

With the bounds tightened around her wrists, porcelain skinned Palyria glared into his eyes. There was nothing to do but smile in that arrogant way when captors couldn’t kill their prisoners.

“You sought out the truth of Luaani. You have wasted your golden dressed men to seek what is there. Your efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. I shall warn you, Krenei, oh the wise and noble of our land, you will fail.”

“Since the beginning of time, we have rose and grew beneath the beams of Solianga, rising in the dawn that gave us the gift of life. But all days must end and when they do, we welcome dusk.”

“When Luaani shines, Mordufa intensifies. His blessed will be tested, pushed to their limits of sanity and all your pathetic attempts to take what is ours shall mean nothing. You won’t see bloodshed like this. You won’t see the fall of the Chiefs, Chieftesses, brothers, sisters, daughters and sons as quick as the blink of your beady eye.”

“The tribes will fight amongst themselves. The shadows will play games to survive the overwhelming power. The courageous will die to protect the weak, and the weak will fall regardless. The beginning of the end will start the instant that blade is dragged across my throat. I wish you luck, Krenei. You will need it.”
