Lonely Moon (The Wolf's Bane Saga Book 2) Page 21

The boy stood back up from the corner where Weylyn had thrown him and Weylyn’s body convulsed into a half-phase. The wolf men faced each other, their teeth barred and their eyes staring into each other’s. Their chests heaved as they panted. Their bodies ached anticipating a fight.

Finally, almost as if Tristan realized what he was doing, he backed down and phased to his full human form. Weylyn did the same.

“I am sorry,” Tristan said. “I did nae mean to fight you.” Weylyn nodded once, accepting his apology.

“I am sorry for striking you,” Weylyn replied.

“I deserved it,” Tristan answered. “I did nae mean to hurt you with my words. You are right. I donnae ken anything about what happened between you and your mate, I only ken what you told me. And I am truly sorry for it. But I love Alexina.”

“I understand that,” Weylyn started gently. “And I am glad you were able to experience that sort of love, but for your own sake, you must think of your father and your position. You are to be Alpha. You must understand the ramifications of what you are doing. Trust me; I ken how strong the pull is. But you have to understand that even if you do marry this human girl, you ken your father,” he stressed, stepping towards him and placing his hands on Tristan’s shoulders. “Marrock will hunt you both down and the gods only ken what he will do to you, no’ to mention her family, when he finds you. If you love her, the best thing for her would be for you to let her go.”

They were both quiet for a long time, Tristan staring at his mentor hearing the truth and the weight of his words. Eventually, Tristan nodded.

“You are right,” he said. “I cannae do that to her. I will tell her in the morning.”

Weylyn saw something flash in his pupil’s eyes, but decided to ignore it, hoping Tristan’s history with his father would prove incentive enough.

“Get some sleep, everything will be all right in the morning,” Weylyn finally said.

“You are right,” Tristan mumbled turning to his cot. “Things will be different in the morning.”
