“I just had to,” said Maud. “After everything she’d done.”
“Well, it was very thoughtful,” said Mr Montague.
A few feet away, Maud saw Paprika showing his medal to his mum.
“Well, Vladimir,” she was saying. “That was mostly awful, but in that last race you were ... not bad. Not bad at all.”
It didn’t sound like much of a compliment to Maud, but it must have meant a lot to Paprika because he was grinning so widely you could see his pointed fangs. Fortunately, no one else seemed to have noticed.
“I’m so glad you’re happy at your new school,” said Mrs Montague. “You never did enjoy being at Primrose Towers very much, did you? Rotwood seems like a wonderful place. Even if the pupils are a little ... er ... unusual.”
“It’s an absolute scream,” said Maud.
In the distance, Penelope let out another screech of terror as Farmer Gilbert led her across the playing field and towards the farm, where all the adorable little piglets, foals and calves were waiting for her.
