“In that case,” said Lily, stretching her arms and fingers towards the ceiling in a gesture of the sort of bliss that comes only from perfect contentment, “This life of ours is going to be pretty damned near perfect.”
Epilogue
Lily, Graeme and Conor’s baby was born two months after the war that never occurred, the gestation period of shifters being somewhat shorter than that of humans. The birth at Dundurn Castle was relatively uneventful, if ever childbirth can be described in such terms, surrounded by Gwynne, Lachlan, Rauth, Rohan and of course her two devoted mates. Lily’s parents had returned to the castle shortly after the Tournament, as soon as all threat from external forces had been eliminated.
It was indeed a boy; the little boy who’d listened to his mother’s songs in that cold prison cell; who’d heard her tell him repeatedly how she loved him, and that his fathers were great men.
There was a good deal of dispute over what his name should be; he had Conor’s dark hair and Graeme’s light eyes. Finally they settled on Kiron, derived from a Gaelic word meaning little dark one.
“It’s the most ironic name in history,” said Lily one day as she held him in her arms.
“Why’s that?” asked Graeme, who was seated with Conor, enjoying the act of doing nothing at all but basking in the glow of their mate and child.
“Because I can’t imagine any creature who could bring so much light to the world.”
One day as Lily sat watching her mates play invented games with Kiron, her twin brother Rohan came to her to tell her that his visit had come to an end.
“Where are you off to now?” she asked, sad to be parting with him once again. But she understood; after all, like her, he never seemed content to settle into a place for long.
“I’ve been doing some reading about witch hunts,” he said.
“Oh dear. I don’t like where this is going.”
Rohan laughed. “Yes, you do know me so well,” he said. “It’s that twin thing, of course. The psychic link that we’re supposed to share from our time in the womb. Anyhow, I thought I’d employ our special skill of leaping and go have a look at some of these supposed witches myself.”
“It sounds to me like someone’s looking for a date,” his sister replied.
“Well, I’ve tried modern dating sites, and, you know…”
“All right. Well, just don’t get burned at any stakes, would you?”
“What do you take me for? I’m a shape-changer; I can shift into a stake if I bloody want to.”
“Yeah, maybe don’t do that if you’re hoping to charm the ladies. We’re not into wood.”
“That’s not what I hear.” Rohan raised an eyebrow and smiled.
“You men and your naughty fixations,” laughed Lily, her eyes moving towards her mates.
Thank God for all of you.
Rohan’s story will be Illusions, coming in Summer 2015.
