  Grayson laughed.

“That’s only 50 thousand volts, Burke. Same as what the police use with a Taser. If you want to be petulant and churlish over things that are in the distant past, keep going. There’s plenty more volts where that came from.”

Burke glared at him defiantly, but in his heart and mind, he knew Grayson would eventually break him. No one could withstand unrestrained torture. Sooner or later, he—or whatever was left of him—would tell Grayson everything he wanted to know.

“You always did have a soft spot in your heart for stray cats Lieutenant Burke. Perhaps Breshna was truly as sweet as she seemed and worthy of your chivalry. You should have known better. You don’t get romantically involved with an Iraqi girl when you are fighting the Iraqis. I understand your sudden disappearance hurt her deeply. I would know. I did most of the hurting. It was quite unpleasant. I hate to be the one to break something else to you, Lieutenant. Your meeting with Pauline at the Hotel Hassler in Rome was not by chance. You just aren’t very lucky at love, are you soldier? Before we get down to the real business at hand, I wanted you to know that.”

Burke slowed his breathing down to calm himself. He sighed and resigned himself to what awaited him his last few hours of his failed life.

If there really is a heaven and hell is it too late to pray?
