“But don’t you worry about the future?” Paige asked, looking anxious. “Retirement accounts and health insurance and finding someone to settle down with. What if you wake up one day and find it’s all too late, and you’re the only one left without a chair when the music stops?”
“Then I’ll find a friendly lap to go sit in.” Declan grinned. “I’ll figure it out, I always do. And hell, at least I’ll have some damn good memories.”
Paige didn’t seem reassured, but then again, she seemed the kind of girl who was tucked in bed by ten every night with a mug of herbal tea and a good book. Declan was more likely to stumble home around dawn, with a killer hangover and lipstick smeared all over his good shirt. His travels had taken him a long way from his home in Sydney, Australia, and even though he’d set up shop now with his own restaurant here on the Cape, that didn’t mean his adventuring days were over. It just meant he kept them limited to the tristate area, so he could be back in the kitchen cooking up a storm in time for the dinner service.
Sure enough, Paige stifled a yawn.
“Past your bedtime?” Declan teased.
“Getting there.” She made to get down from the flatbed, but Declan had some manners left in him, after all this time.
“Let me.” He hopped down and took her hand to help her, but when she was on solid ground, Paige didn’t let go. She narrowed her eyes at him.
“What?” Declan asked, but whatever he was expecting, it definitely wasn’t Paige suddenly going up on her tiptoes and kissing him, right there where he stood.
Damn.
Her mouth was hot and sweet, tasting like the bourbon she’d been sipping. Instinctively, Declan’s arms came around her, pulling her closer, until her sinful curves were pressed right against him, and he could feel the heat of her body as she boldly teased his mouth open and stroked her tongue into his mouth.
Declan’s senses roared to life. Dear God, who was this woman? He’d been wrong about her, that’s for sure. Because demure was the last thing Paige seemed, kissing him deeper, setting his body on fire and his head scrambling, blank with lust.
He growled against her, tangling one hand in her silky hair as the other roamed over her incredible body. Paige shivered under his touch, so responsive it made him dream of ripping those clothes off and showing her exactly what he could do, skin to skin. He bit down softly on her lower lip, and Paige moaned into his mouth. His blood rushed south so fast he saw stars, and he held her tighter, lost to the rush of heat, and sweetness, and—
Paige stepped back.
“There,” she said, looking thoughtful. Declan’s blood was surging, and his body was already demanding more, but Paige smoothed down her blouse, as unruffled as if she’d just given him a peck on the cheek. “At least I’ve done one interesting thing. Thanks.” She broke into a smile. “Enjoy the rest of your night!”
And then she walked away, leaving Declan panting there on the sand.
What the hell just happened?
He shook his head, still dazed, and watched her silhouette disappear into the shadows. Suddenly, taking that cute brunette home for the night and wowing her with his usual lines didn’t seem to have the same appeal.
That proved it. He’d been right from the start.
Good girls were the most dangerous type of all.
