“Well, so much for prestige.” He sighed. “But, seriously, I don’t get paid for taking care of office business. Gotta get in those billable hours, ya know. I’m short of my goal this month.”
Michael stood beside Lisa’s minivan while she fumbled with the lock. “What’s on your agenda this afternoon?” he asked.
“The usual. Grocery store, dry cleaners, post office, bank. Then pick up Kat and Jacob at three.” She opened the door of the van and climbed inside.
Michael leaned over and pecked her on the cheek. “I’d better run.” As he headed across the parking lot toward his car, the breeze barely ruffled his stylishly short auburn hair.
With an aching sadness that never seemed to leave her these days, Lisa remembered again that bygone time when he’d worn his hair a little too shaggy, when old, faded jeans and rumpled chambray shirts had been his standard attire…when his eyes had often been more teasing than serious.
“See you tonight,” Michael shouted over his shoulder. “Don’t hold dinner; I might be late.”
Lisa closed the door and scowled. “I love you, too, Michael. I really do.”
