She didn’t even need to read the rest of the latest message. She knew what it would say. Just the same as the last twenty she’d received since taking over as head of MedPath. Had Abu felt this inadequate when bombarded with daily demands for answers about why the Saa’ar were dying?

  Identifying viruses and bacteria was well outside her area of expertise. How was she expected to get results when even an expert like Abu hadn’t been able to determine which organism had been responsible for the Saa’ar’s deaths?

  Sometimes she wondered whether the pressure of these continual requests for answers had contributed to his death, especially given the guilt he seemed to bear from having failed to save them.

  Had the stress triggered a heart attack? The Commandant had hinted that he might have had a congenital weakness. Apparently his father had died young.

  The main thing was to ascertain whether he’d caught something from the aliens. Although she’d carried out test after test—using the latest screening equipment they’d brought with them, knowing they’d need to check for dangerous microbes when they reached their destination—nothing suggested that he had. The sputum and blood samples she’d taken from Olga, Thanksin and herself had also come up clear of anything unusual.

  All the evidence was pointing to a myocardial infarction. The Commandant would be overjoyed. That would mean the rest of the personnel were not at risk.

  Dana sighed and sat down to write her report, giving the all clear.
