“It’s not your problem to deal with. Plus you wouldn’t believe even if I told you.”
“Try me.” His firm voice made the tears begin to flood down her cheeks. Instantly his face dropped and the anger inside of him vanished. “Kassie, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you I just wanted to help.”
“I’m pregnant.” She blurted in between sobs. Jason shook his head in confusion for a moment. A million different thoughts raced through his head. He couldn’t believe he had been so stupid to believe they had such a connection when this whole time she had been seeing someone else.
“You were with someone else?”
“No. It’s yours.” Kassie met his eyes with hers, begging him to believe her. Her heart was on the verge of flying out of her chest at any moment.
“That’s not even possible.”
“I know.” More tears flowed freely from her eyes as she allowed herself to sink down into the couch. “But it is, Jason. I promise you I can’t even remember the last time I have been with anyone besides you.”
Jason sunk into the couch next to her in fear that his knees may give out at any moment. A thousand questions raced through his head. “It’s only been a few days…”
“That’s why I’m so scared. Jason I felt him kick this morning.” Her eyes had grown double their size with fear. “That’s not normal.”
“How is that even possible?”
“It’s because of who we are… what we are.” Kassie took a deep shaky breath and steadied herself. “If we are both were-wolf hybrids… than what will he be?”
“You’re sure?” Looking at her for reassurance he slowly laid his hand on her stomach. After a short moment, he felt a tiny little flutter below his hand and a smile instantly covered his face. “I’m going to be a dad?”
Kassie nodded and laughed despite the tears that still filled her eyes. “You are.” They both sat in silence considering what it all meant, how it would all end.
“Have you ever heard of this before?”
“I’ve heard of a human and a hybrid breeding, but never of two hybrids.”
“Me either.” Sitting in silence Jason slowly slid his hand onto Kassie’s knee and gave her a gentle squeeze.
“Jason, I’m so scared.” Sobs overtook her body as she melted into him. Wrapping his arms around her he allowed tears to silently fall down his cheeks as well.
“It’ll be okay. We’ll figure it out. I promise.” Jason reassured her as he tried to rack his brain for answers. “There has to be someone who knows how to handle this. Someone who has been through this before.”
“Maybe one of your friends from the pack would know?”
“I’ll call Jerome.” Jason left the room for only a few moments and returned to sit next to Kassie on the couch. “He said he’d be right over. I told him we could talk on the phone, but he insisted on coming over.” They sat silently hand in hand as the clock ticked excruciatingly slow in the back ground.
Finally a knock came at the door and Jason jumped to open it. “Thank you so much for coming.” Kassie heard him say.
“Kassie? How are you feeling?” Jerome took her hand, helping her stand as if she were a fragile child and lightly wrapped his arms around her. Seeing beyond him Kassie noticed a very beautiful woman standing just inside the door next to Jason. She had wildly curly black hair that made her pale skin nearly glow. She wore heavy eye make-up and dark burgundy lipstick.
As they locked eyes she smiled sadly and took a few steps closer to Kassie, taking her hands in her own once Jerome released her. “Kassie, I’m Willow.”
“It’s nice to meet you.”
“I wish it were different circumstances.” Her face was full of sadness which made Kassie even more nervous. “Can we sit?” Nodding she sat beside Willow on the couch and Jason sat next to her sliding his arm protectively around her shoulders.
“Willow is a witch. I thought she might have a different insight into these sort of circumstances.” Scooting a chair up closer to the group Jerome sat and folded his hands in his lap.
“A witch?” Kassie asked in surprise.
“Did you think you were the only real life secret society?” She laughed.
Quickly Kassie tried to back track, afraid she had offended her. “No, of course not. I have just never met a witch before. I didn’t mean-“
“It’s quite alright.” Willow interrupted giving her a comforting smile. “I was only teasing, dear.”
Clearing his throat Jerome began to speak again. “I myself have never dealt with anything like this, so I thought it would be good to call in someone who had.”
Jason felt a small sense of relief at the thought of not being the only others to have gone through this. “So you know others?”
“I know of two others.” Willow took in a deep breath and looked to Jerome who nodded for her to continue. “I feel as if I need to inform you of both possibilities.” The small sense of comfort Jason had once gain slowly seeped from him as he heard the heavy sadness that incased each word Willow said.
“There are things you must understand. This baby… it may not be like you.” She looked around her searching for the words to say. “Let me tell you a little story. Several years ago I was called by a friend of mine to help with a sick mother. She had just given birth and was unable to regain her strength, they feared for her life. The baby had grown so quickly that it needed more nutrients than the mother could supply.
Growing rapidly, he took everything from his mother leaving her merely a bag of bones. We made her remedies and did what we could to save her life, but sadly she was unable to recover.” Willow wiped a small tear from her cheek and cleared her throat before she continued.
“And the baby… the baby was different. He had a thirst for blood unlike any others I have ever seen. He would bite down on your finger and hold on for dear life, trying to bite what flesh he could from you. You all turn at a full moon and only during a full moon. This little boy had no control over his turning. He would turn when he was angry or hungry or anything for that matter. Although he was different in the way he turned, he had the same effects while being in a different state.
He was still consumed by the natural instincts and couldn’t control nor remember what he did while he was turned. After many years of trying to help him harness it he attacked his father one night, killing him. The same night he got lose and ran to the town where he attacked two more. Before he could kill anymore, a man shot him down in his tracks, unaware that he was actually a seven year old boy inside.”
Kassie allowed the tears to flow freely from her eyes as she heard the outcome of the story. Grabbing her hand from her lap Jason wrapped it in his and kissed her forehead. “You said you had known of two of these situations. What is the other one?” He hoped for Kassie’s sake that it had a happier ending. Reaching up with a soft touch she wiped a single tear from his cheek as well. He hadn’t even realized he was crying.
“Yes, yes. This story takes a much different turn. A friend of mine came to me one day with a situation very similar to yours and asked for my help. Having already had a horrible experience, I was terrified for her. We start natural remedies immediately and she began eating unlike her natural diet. As hard as it was, she choked down pounds and pounds of raw meat every day in able to keep her and the baby healthy.
She still lost weight and was very weak, but this allowed the baby enough to leave some for her as well. Her pregnancy was only five months long, with the baby growing so fast. The birth was very rough on her but she recovered after a few days.”
“Well, that’s great.” Jason said shooting a forced smile at Kassie. “That means that people have made it through his before.”
Looking down at her feet reluctantly, she tried to find the words to tell them the rest. “The little girl wasn’t quite like her parents though. Just like the other child she didn’t just change on a full moon. However she had more self-control and her parents were able to help her control her emotio
ns. She was able to talk herself out of turning except for during a full moon.
During a full moon she is much more powerful than an average wolf and much more unable to control herself. The moon does something to her, turns her into something she doesn’t want to be. Her parents created a room in their house that was lined with bars, almost like a cage, for her to be in for every full moon. Since then I believe she has done well and been able to lead a healthy life, just a more caged life than any five year old should have.”
So many emotions ran through Kassie’s head that she began to get a head ache. Would her baby be okay? Would she be okay? Already she felt such a sense of love for the little bundle that was growing inside of her that she couldn’t imagine not being around for all the milestones of their life.
“So, we can make it through this then?” Jason said with a tentative smile, scared to let himself get his hopes up to high. “Kassie and the baby, they can both make it through this?”
“Yes, there is a good chance if we start right away that they can. We don’t have a day to waste.”
“Well, then let’s get started. What do you need?” Grabbing a note pad Willow began scribbling a list of items hastily. “Take Jerome to the store and grab these items. I’ll make Kassie at remedy tea that will help soothe the baby. He is already awfully strong so we don’t want any broken ribs.”
Looking the list over Kassie felt a huge pang of guilt. “That’s a lot of meat. Here let me grab my wallet.” She began to stand to grab a card from her wallet that she knew would barely cover all the supplies, before Jason grabbed her hand and pulled her back down.
“Don’t you dare worry about that and don’t feel guilty either. I will take care of you and our little one. I don’t want you to be stressed about anything. Sit back and let Willow take care of you. Jerome and I will be back soon.” Jason kissed her lovingly on the cheek as he and Jerome made their way from the apartment.
Before he reached the door Jason turned back around and made his way back to her. Kneeling before her he looked deep into her scared eyes and took her hands in his. “Kassie, I love you.” Her heart leapt to her throat as tears welled up in her eyes.
“I love you too.”
“And we’re going to make it through this. Together.”

Five Years Later
“Willow would you mind grabbing the other tray of cookies?” Kassie asked as she balanced a large birthday cake in her hand.
“Of course.” Willow, one of Kassie’s dearest friends, followed close behind her as they made their way through the crowds of laughing children out to the back yard. “Hi boys.”
“Well, hello ladies.” Jason smiled brightly as he and Jerome turned their direction. Flipping another hamburger on the grill he kissed Kassie’s cheek as she walked by, causing a radiant smile to cover her face.
Kassie stood for a moment looking out over their gorgeous back yard and all the small children who ran and played. The large marble pool was filled with many parents and small children while a life guard watched from the edge. What a beautiful life they led, one many could only dream of.
Her heart was so full of happiness she didn’t know how she could ever top what she had now. “Mommy!” A little dark haired boy came running to her and wrapped his arms around Kassie’s waist.
“Hi sweetie!” She bent down and engulfed him in a tight hug, kissing his forehead. “Are you having fun?” Familiar amber eyes stared back at her, sparkling with excitement.
“It’s the best birthday ever, Mom!”
“That’s because your mom is the best mom ever, right?” Jason bent down beside her and wrapped his arms around both of them.
“Well, duh.” Just as fast as he had ran in, Sawyer ran off and joined two other boys in a sword fight just off the patio.
“Well, duh.” Jason laughed as he pulled her into him. “I also have the best wife ever.”
“And you’re the best Dad ever.” Kassie placed her hands around her swollen belly and kissed him happily, “I can’t wait for our little girl to meet you.”

Midnight Desire
“You can’t be serious. There’s no way that I will permit my daughter to work someplace like that. I know that we told you to get a job, but I never imagined that you would take us, so literally. We wanted to put a fire underneath you to see if we could make you realize that your place is in college. All of your brothers and sisters are there right now. I don’t even know what to do with you anymore.” Frank looked at his daughter Diana and he was visibly concerned for her safety. She was always a bit of a tomboy, but she was still a lady.
“I think we all know that I am not qualified for anything. I should’ve been more prepared in high school, but I just didn’t know what I wanted to do. I figured over time that something would come to me, but it never did. I’m tired of being looked at, as the black sheep of the family. It’s not my fault. I’m not like my brothers and sisters.” Diana paced back and forth on the kitchen floor. The ugly green linoleum was there, since the moment that she was born. She had no idea why they hadn’t renovated, as all of her friends had already gone down that road a few times to speak of. “I’m going to have to do this for the time being. Believe me; I’m not happy about it myself. I can think of better things to do than spending my nights working behind the counter at a convenience store.”
Her mother was beside herself, but she couldn’t say anything. She didn’t want to make any kind of outburst that would give her daughter the wrong impression. She was very impressed by her strength of character. The one thing that she had that all of her other children didn’t was a semblance of herself. She was young and impressionable, but she knew how to detect that bull shit meter.
“I don’t know how you can stand there and let your daughter do something so insane. When I said that you should get a job, I was thinking more along the lines of maybe in a boutique somewhere. You could’ve easily hit up your aunt Teresa for a job, but you thought that that was above you. I would love to keep an eye on you, but you know that I work the night shift at the plant. I could probably stop in every so often, but I just don’t feel safe with you out there alone like that.” Frank threw his hands up in exasperation. He walked away, swinging the door closed behind him and leaving Diana with her mother.
“Your father is worried about you, Diana. He wants nothing, but the best for all of his children. We talked about this at length and you really should go to college in the fall. I didn’t want to tell the other children, but I was at exactly like you. When I got out of high school, I had no direction. I was even tempted to go into the armed forces. I thought that that might give me a sense of purpose and give me the discipline that I needed. I’m not suggesting that that should be your path. We both know that god works in mysterious ways.” Marianne crossed her hands over her chest and looked towards the heavens for some kind of inspiration.
“I really don’t have time to debate this. I have a job to do this evening and they expect me to be there for inventory. I’ll be alone after midnight, but they have given me a baseball bat to protect myself.” She only said that to make her mother roll her eyes. What she really had was a can of mace that had never failed her in the past. She was a blond bombshell and she had aspirations to become a model or maybe even an actress. It seemed like a pipe dream, but it was the only thing that she felt that she would be good at.
It was not lost on her the way that the boys had been looking at her. Walking down the street wearing spandex shorts and a halter t
op didn’t exactly hide what god blessed her with. She was a short 5’5 spitfire with the kind of attitude that would put men in their place. Unfortunately, she was also shy and didn’t know how to make a good first impression.
She walked out into the living room and found herself staring at her reflection in the mirror. Her body was made from hours of working her ass off in the gym. She liked what she saw, but the uniform that she was wearing was butt ugly gray. It made her feel like she was doing herself a disservice. It would only pay a minimum wage. She thought that maybe going to college wasn’t such a bad idea. In high school, she was the head cheerleader and the one that every boy wanted to be with. She was innocent and had remained pure despite the temptation that was all around her. Prom night was the biggest test of all. She could still hear the stinging words of her date, when he finally found out that she wasn’t going to put out. He screamed at her in public and got a swift knee to the groin, as a result.
She had gotten a standing ovation for putting that man on notice. It wasn’t the reputation that she wanted, but it was the one that she was given.
Her brothers and two sisters teased her mercilessly about being some kind of bad ass. She never thought of herself, as someone that could take care of herself in a fight. She was afraid of breaking a nail, but she was determined not to allow anybody beyond the gates of her thighs. This was a hard thing to do, considering that all of her friends had found it necessary to tell her of their exploits with their respective boyfriends. It sounded like it was over before it began and that was not what she wanted for her first time.
Chapter two
“I don’t know what to do, Roman. I think about her all the time. I see her in town and I’m tempted to talk to her, but I have no idea what to say. She’s way out of my league. I was wondering if you could help me to find a way to tell her how I feel. You’re my older brother and you’ve just returned from active duty in the navy. I’ve seen the way that you are with girls and I doubt that you’ve been lonely a day in your life.” Daniel was a little smaller than his muscle-bound brother Roman. They only had each other. Their parents had been dead from the moment that they were old enough to know better.
