Lyncee squeezed me in a giant hug. “Oh. My. God. Never leave me for the summer again. I missed you so much.”
“I think you’re choking me.” I attempted to peel her off.
“Sorry. I’m just so excited.” She blew a strand of dark hair out of her face. “So? What do you think?” She released me and spun around so I could see her Luke Skywalker shirt. “Do you like it?”
“It’s amazing,” I said.
Del caught my eye and grinned. “Be glad C.C. isn’t here to see you adorned in Princess Leia’s face. He’d probably hump your leg.”
“Are you comparing him to Jimbo?” Kenadi wrinkled her nose.
“No, but you know he was a giant perv.”
We giggled. Wasn’t that the truth? But in all honesty, I think we all missed having the guys around. If nothing more than to have someone to chat with about video games.
“So, are we the new Nerd Herd, since the guys are in college now?” I asked Delyla.
“Well, we’ll never be as dorky as the original, but yeah, someone has to keep the club going.”
“And who better than the hottest chicks in the school?” Kenadi tossed her braids over her shoulder.
“Amen to that.” Lyncee looped her arm through mine.
We made our way down the hall, past Rori and Michelle who were already gossiping about everyone and their brother. Brady Wilkes was hanging on Michelle, like her tits were a jungle gym. Talk about making me want to spew. From here, I noticed his nose was more crooked than I remembered. Lyncee’s doing, I assumed.
They shot us dirty looks when we went by. But I could care less. I had my real friends with me.
By the time sixth hour gym rolled around, I was ready to have the day be done with. The only consolation was that Sage was in this class with me, and Mr. Eckhert decided we’d work on soccer. Thank God for small favors.
As I stood on the field, dribbling the ball toward the goal, I heard Rori and Michelle talking.
“Twenty bucks says now that Sage and Grace are together again, she’ll go back to sucking at soccer,” Rori said.
“Please, she thinks she’s all that. Did you see the way her and Delyla strutted down the hall today? Like they own the school?” Michelle said.
My insides knotted. Those two pissed me off. Why couldn’t they just shut the hell up? But this time, I wasn’t going to let them get to me. I knew who my real friends were. And those two were bitches, plain and simple.
“Hey, Rori, catch,” I shouted. My leg swung back and I kicked the ball right at her. The soccer ball flew through the air and hit her face with a loud slap.
“Oops, sorry, I was aiming for the goal. Guess your big face got in my way.”
“You did that on purpose,” she screamed, holding her cheek, which was already turning red.
“How could I? You know how bad my aim is.” I gave her a sweet smile and spun on my heel.
“Wow, that was awesome,” Sage said from beside me.
“Thanks. That, there, was a long time coming.”
“So there’s a Star Wars marathon on tonight.”
“Hmm … do we have to dress up?”
“Most definitely.” He smiled, taking my hand in his.
“I might have to get a new laser blaster. Caleb told me I’m not allowed to use his again,” I said.
“That’s fine, I think I’ve got a lightsaber you can borrow.” He tugged me to a stop and gazed down at me.
“Just shut up and kiss me.” I stood on my tiptoes and wrapped my arms around his neck. Now this was a happy ending.
