“And it will be my last kill.”
Dom released me the look of shame in his eyes under different circumstances would have made me happy.
Taylor had raised his sons to be monsters. I could suddenly understand why Henry had kept Erica away from him. Why he had hidden her.
Taylor crossed the room and snatched the knife from Dom’s hand.
But when he turned back to face me, moving in close to sink the knife into my child, the look of triumph died on his face.
I thrust the blade up underneath his ribcage, driving it up into his heart.
His eyes widened in surprise as I twisted the blade.
Taylor stepped back, and I kept my grip on the knife, my legs turning to jelly as I stood pinned against the wall and watched him drop to his knees.
Dom lunged towards me and I cringed, closing my eyes as I held my breath and waited for the blow of his fists to lash against my body but they never came.
Instead the sound of his muffled cries drew my attention and I opened my eyes once more to see Dom fighting against the guards that held him back.
Taylor’s mouth opened and closed but no words left his lips as he fell forward, his body hitting the carpet with a dull thud.
Clapping filled the air and I jumped, my eyes scanning around the room until they came to rest on Andy.
He stood in the middle of the room, a wide grin on his face as he continued to clap.
I’d never seen him look so happy and it sickened my stomach.
“Bravo, Carrie, for a minute there I was worried you wouldn’t go through with it and then you pulled it out of the bag.”
“I’ll kill you, you bastard!” Dom said, struggling in the grip of the guards as he turned his vitriol on his brother.
“Shut up, Dom, you should be thanking me. This is what we wanted, now that he’s dead he can’t hold our inheritance hostage anymore. We’re free to be the men we’ve always wanted to be and there’s not a God damned thing he can do about it.”
“You planned this, you wanted me to kill him…” I said my voice shaking as I pushed away from the wall.
“Well I couldn’t very well do it myself and risk losing my inheritance. If there was even the remotest possibility that his death occurred at my hands it would have been the end for me.”
“You manipulated me, you allowed him to almost kill my child… What if I’d failed?”
“I’d have found another way and you wouldn’t be pregnant anymore.”
“This was just a game to you, a sick and twisted game so you could get your money!”
“Not a game, Carrie, I still want my sister returned and neither you nor David is off the hook but I needed Taylor dead more.”
“You sick, creep!” I lunged at him but he caught my arm, his strength surprising me as he twisted my arm up behind my back.
“Tell David he should consider this fair warning. If he doesn’t do as I ask the next time it won’t just be a threat,” Andy said, pressing me against his chest.
I felt the needle pierce the skin of my neck and I fought his grip as heat flooded through my body.
Darkness rushed against my vision as I sank towards the floor.
The sound of the knife thudding against the carpet registered dully in the back of my mind before the dark claimed me for itself.
Chapter 15
David wrapped his arms around me, crushing my body against his as his mouth found mine. The kiss was enough to steal the air from my lungs and I wound my arms around his neck as he slipped his tongue between my lips.
Clinging to him I whimpered as his hands slid down over my back to my ass. I could feel his excitement at having me in his arms pressing against the softness of my belly.
“Carrie,” he said, pulling away and staring down at me.
I expected him to stare at me with passion and instead he stared down at me with concern.
“Carrie,” he called out and even though he was holding me in his arms his voice came from far away.
“Please, Carrie, wake up! Jesus Christ, what have they done to you…”
“You’ve got to help her, when I found her she wasn’t breathing properly…” David said and the panic in his voice sent my heart beat soaring.
“David,” I said, opening my eyes and staring into his face.
He crouched over me, his eyes masked with panic and fear as he cradled me in his arms.
My head pounded and there was a distinct coppery taste in my mouth.
“Where are they? We have to stop him…” I tried to sit up but David’s grip on me prevented my movement.
“They’re gone, we got here too late to stop them.”
“Who’s we?” I said as he propped me up against his chest.
A medic crouched next to me, his fingers pressed to the pulse in my wrist.
“When you told me what island you were on I called in the Special Forces, they’re combing the island now but from what I’ve heard the Banks are long gone.”
“Did you find Rosa?” I asked, my voice wobbling as I thought about her.
“Who’s Rosa?”
“She’s Taylor’s daughter, Andy killed her mother and then…”
“They found her in the woods, she has a bullet graze on her thigh but she’s safe now. The medics airlifted her out because she was inconsolable…”
David trailed off and cupped my face, his eyes filling with a ferocity I hadn’t seen in him before.
“Carrie, I’m so sorry I let them take you, I don’t expect you to ever forgive me but I need you to know I didn’t stop looking for you…”
“There’s nothing to forgive, he was going to kill you, David. We had no choice…”
The radio crackled to life and a voice rattled through.
“We’ve found a man in the infirmary, he seems to be in bad shape but your men are saying it’s Marcus…”
“He survived? I watched them carry him out but I never thought…” David said, his voice pained.
“Andy wanted him alive, they were hoping to use Marcus to get intel on you and Aaron.”
“When I get my hands on Taylor I’m going to…”
I shook my head and strained to see past David’s body. The room was empty but I could just make out the dark blood stain on the carpet in the early morning light.
“Taylor’s dead,” I said, my voice devoid of emotion.
“How?” David asked, his fingers sliding beneath my chin as he tilted my face up to his.
Guilt gnawed at my insides. I’d killed a man and yet I didn’t feel bad about actually taking his life.
Instead I felt guilty that I wasn’t feeling guilty about it…
“I killed him,” I said, staring up into David’s face. I searched his expression for any sign that he was disgusted at me.
The medic recoiled away from me, surprise crossing his face.
“He was going to kill our child, he had a knife and…” I trailed off as David’s finger found the nick in the fabric of the red dress.
“He came close didn’t he?”
I nodded and chewed my lip, dragging my gaze away from David’s face. If he couldn’t understand then…
“I’m so proud of you, Carrie, you’re the most amazing, clever, resourceful, and strong woman I’ve ever met.”
“But I killed him.”
“If you hadn’t done it then I would have. And if I could have saved you the pain of having to take another human life then I would. But make no mistake, Carrie, what you did was right… You protected our child, you stayed alive…”
He pressed his hand over the soft roundness of my belly and dipped his face to mine.
When his lips found mine I sank into his embrace. The fear and panic of what I’d endured at the hands of the Banks slowly fading in the face of David’s undying love for me.
“We need to get you to the hospital, have you checked out…” The medic said, “we can get a stretcher in here if you don’t think you can stand.”
I shook my he
ad and the world swam a little but it cleared as quickly as it had arrived.
“I can stand,” I said, and David wrapped his arms around me lifting me in his arms.
He held me, my feet barely brushing the floor and I smiled.
“I said I can stand,” I said, keeping my arms around his neck.
“I know but after everything that’s happened I’m not sure I want to let you out of my arms.”
“How’s Jenson…” I started to say and the world swam again, the colours momentarily blinding.
“Carrie,” David said, his voice frightened.
Pain bloomed through my abdomen and I doubled over in his arms, my fingers digging into his flesh as another wave of agony ripped through me.
“What’s wrong?” he said, holding me in his arms as the medic fought to strap a heart monitor to me.
“David, it’s the baby…”
Pain rippled through me once more as the world went grey.
“Carrie!”
He called to me but the world tilted and then went black, pain swallowing me into the hole that ripped open my world.
