Butterfly Secrets Page 22

by G. L. Blackhouse

“Tiffany will kill you, Jim!” Julie scolded.

“Nah, me and Tiff broke up. She left me fer that doctor that she was workin’ fer. She called me today and told me that she was in love,” Jimmy said.

“I’m sorry, Jim,” Amy said, apparently already affected by Jim’s charm.

“Ah, ain’t no reason to be sad. I’m fine,” Jimmy said, winking at Amy.

“Oh, no! Not you, too, Amy!” Julie huffed, apparently none too pleased with her friend’s actions.

Amy shot Jim a wide grin.

I had to laugh inside. I never would understand Jim’s charm.

Music played outside in Aunt Georgia’s yard. It was a local band with a soft, mellow vibe.

It was sunset and in the trees hung mason jars with lit candles in them that illuminated the yard like dozens of little fireflies. The guests sat on blankets in the grass. I wore a simple, white wedding gown with lace, and sandals. I carried a bouquet with pink, blue and red flowers. Jimmy met me at the steps. He had on jeans and a white tee. Katie wore a white sundress and had a wreath of daisies on her head. Kyle stood underneath the altar made of wood and baby’s breath and held a pillow with the rings. Kyle wore jeans and a white tee as well and no shoes. Jackson was dressed in a white button-up, jeans, and brown leather flip flops. His grey eyes seemed to gleam in the remainder of sunlight like a beacon leading a ship to shore. My heart melted.

Jackson smiled widely as I approached. Jim walked me to Jackson, and then Jackson reached for my hand, and Jim took his place on the side. Julie stood beside me, holding a simple bouquet and was crying.

Aunt Georgia and Jackson’s mom sat side by side, crying over a covered picnic table with a feed sack tablecloth made especially for them.

Jackson gently took my hand and stared into my eyes. He mouthed to me the words. “I love you.”

From that moment on, the wedding, the guests, the tears of joy, the soft music in the background faded away. All that existed at that moment was our love for one another. I felt warmth as a blue butterfly landed on the flowers as we said our vows. Although I couldn’t see Jordy, I knew that on some level she was there. Supporting us and celebrating our love.

Reverend Collins pronounced us husband and wife. Jackson and I kissed. His kiss, although simple, was once again like our first kiss.

Jackson and I danced almost the entire evening as our families laughed and ate. Just as the last guests left, the blue butterfly returned and danced around Jackson and me.

“I know, Jordy, he’s perfect,” I said in a whisper as I looked at the butterfly and smiled.

Jackson and I walked to the pond and set out three lanterns so that they floated away.

“For you, Jordy, Mama, and Grandma. Your light always remains with us, in our hearts forever,” I said as I watched the lanterns float in the pond.

However, I didn’t feel sad as I thought of Jordy, Mama, and Grandma May, but rather was assured that in their own way, they were with me even now and had never left.

Jackson held my hand as we watched the lanterns.

“You never cease to amaze me, Em,” Jackson said with a huge smile.

“I bet I can top this,” I said with a grin.

“Oh, really?” Jackson said with a curious expression.

I reached into my pocket and handed Jackson the piece of gum that he had given me outside the ambulance.

Jackson took the gum and gave me a puzzled expression.

“Read it,” I said, laughing as I pointed to the gum wrapper.

  Jackson carefully read the wrapper.

“What? We’re having a baby?” he asked excitedly.

“Yes, I just found out this morning,” I said with a smile.

“I thought we couldn’t. I mean, I thought you said...”

“I know, but we are,” I said with a huge smile.

Jackson just stood there in shock.

  “Are you okay?” I asked.

“I’m more than okay. I’m ecstatic!” Jackson said, laughing as he picked me up and spun me around.

“I love you, Jackson Roderick,” I said, laughing.

“I love you too, Amelia Roderick.”

Jackson stopped spinning me and then bent down as he tenderly kissed my belly.

  “And you, too, Baby Roderick.”

  I laughed.

“A baby, Em. I knew it!” Jackson said excitedly as he stood back up.

“Oh, really?” I asked, somewhat surprised.

“Yeah, well, you’re not the only one that dreams. I have some of my own, you know,” Jackson said.

“You have, have you?” I teased as I playfully smacked him on the arm.

“Grandma May paid me a visit about a week ago,” he said proudly.

  “What?” I asked in shock.

“Yep, I swear, Em, guess she likes me too,” he said smiling.

I couldn’t believe it. Even now Grandma May still found a way to surprise me.

“She even held the baby, Em. It was a girl. We named her Jordan, but we called her...”

“Jordy,” I said softly, finishing Jackson’s sentence with a smile.

  Jackson nodded yes.

I hadn’t lost Jordy after all. Somehow a miracle had happened. I was given a child. I thought I could never have and even now Jordy’s spirit would live on. I would teach our child each day about her aunt and Grandma who both had a love for her so strong that even time and space couldn’t separate her from them.

“It’s perfect,” I said smiling and hugging him. All of my life I had seen my gifts and these dreams as a curse, but now I realized that because of them my family would remain connected to me forever.

Jackson and I kissed underneath the moonlight as the lanterns floated in the pond.

Grandma had brought me back home to love and to myself.

I smiled as I thought of Grandma’s words, “Honey, sometimes you have to break a heart to heal it.” At the time I didn’t understand it, but now I did. I was finally back home. Home to Jackson, the love of my life. Home to Jordy, Grandma and Mama. Our family had been brought back together through the miracle of love.
