It was hard resisting the temptation to lash out at her. As I rolled the small globe with the tranquilizer spell around in my hand, I reminded myself of the importance of getting her to invite me in, or at the very least open the door enough for me to release the spell. I’d never been good at casting spells myself, but one could get anything from the police evidence room.
“I’d just like to ask you a few more questions about your brother,” I said with a reassuring smile. “It’ll only take a moment.”
“I don’t know where my brother is or what he’s been up to,” she snapped.
Her response made me hesitate as I rolled the spell around in my hand. It was possible she hadn’t told the council anything to make them suspect me. That would mean I couldn’t kill her. It wouldn’t be right to kill her if she wasn’t guilty of betraying me.
“The Council of Witches told me you spoke to them earlier today about your brother,” I began. “I’d just like to clarify a few details.”
Beatrice’s eyes flashed with anger. “I haven’t seen Desmond in years. If he’s responsible for that witch disappearing, she’s probably already dead, and you’ll never find him.”
Looking around the area to make sure no one was watching, I pretended to consider leaving. I turned to Beatrice with a smirk. She panicked and tried to shut the door. She was too late. I slammed my body against the door and pushed my way inside.
Before I could toss down the spell, Beatrice swung a bat at me, nearly hitting me in the head.
“Fucking bitch,” I hissed.
“I’m just as happy to see you, Desmond,” she replied with a sneer. “I take it you’re here to kill me.”
“Why would I kill my own sister?” I asked.
She snorted and swung the bat at me again. This time, when I ducked, I tossed the spell her way. My sister was smarter than I’d given her credit for. The spell hit an invisible shield and disintegrated.
“A spelled bat?” I asked with raised eyebrows.
“It’s not all I’ve got,” she shot back.
“Come on, Bea,” I crooned. “Be a good girl, and maybe I won’t kill you.”
“I’m not nearly as stupid as you think,” she snapped.
“You were a fool to talk to those witches about me,” I told her. “Now, I have no choice but to make sure you don’t interfere with my plans. It’s your choice, Bea. We’re family, so I’m willing to let you live. Naturally, you’ll have to stay locked up until you can’t cause any more problems for me, but I really don’t want to kill you.”
“You promised to kill her!” Katya screeched. I ignored the irritating shade.
“You’ll really let me live if I go with you?” she asked hesitantly. She seemed to be considering my offer. My sister was too stupid to live.
“Of course, Bea,” I promised. “I still remember all the fun we used to have trying to turn into birds. Do you remember how fun that was?”
Bea smiled. “Yes, we did have fun. You said it was impossible, but you still tried it with me.”
I hadn’t really tried, but I’d enjoyed watching my sister fail. “Come with me, Bea, and you’ll be safe. You already know I’m going to have to kill you if you don’t cooperate. I won’t have any choice.”
My sister was too gullible to realize she was walking into a trap. She reached down with one hand and smoothed the billowing dress she wore. It looked ridiculous on her.
“I’ll go with you, Desmond,” she finally agreed as Katya continued to seethe at my side. Once Katya had a body again, I’d slap her. For now, I simply ignored her. Katya should know I wasn’t really making a deal with my sister. Once I’d decided someone’s punishment, I didn’t change my mind. Not often, at least. Had I discovered Beatrice was innocent, I would have spared her life, but she was guilty of betraying me.
“We should hurry,” I told her.
“I’ll grab my things,” Beatrice replied.
“I’ll get you whatever you need,” I assured her. “We don’t have much time. I have to work tonight. The police force has to deal with the scum of the Earth and demon realms.”
Beatrice’s jaw clenched, probably from her effort to bite back a snarky comment. I followed her out of the crappy trailer I’d grown up in.
“I’m looking forward to spending a few hours catching up with you, dear sister,” I remarked with a pleasant smile.
Beatrice turned to me with a smile of her own. “Catching up?” She laughed before she continued. “First, you’ll have to catch me.”
The billowy dress dropped to the ground, and Beatrice took off running. I ran after her, knowing I’d easily catch her. Even in this borrowed body, I was faster. To my utter shock, she leapt into the air and changed forms. She flew up into the sky in the form of a falcon.
“That deceitful bitch!” I snarled.
“It serves you right for considering sparing her life,” Katya taunted.
“You stupid cunt,” I snarled. “With the sedation spell broken, I had to trick her into coming with me. Now, she’s gone. Who knows where she’ll go? She could go to the police.”
“Not likely now that she knows you’re with them,” Katya told me. “How are you going to get her now?”
“I’ll come up with something,” I muttered. “When I get my hands on my sister, she’ll wish she’d chosen to do things the easy way. She will definitely pay for this.”
Chapter 48
Gryph
“It’s time to wake up, beautiful,” I crooned from close to Julia’s ear.
“Go away,” she muttered sleepily. It was no surprise she was tired. I’d been unable to resist the temptation to wake my mate up three times to slide into her body. I didn’t think I’d ever get enough of her.
“We need to pick up Oliver,” I reminded her as I began to kiss my way down her body.
Julia moaned when my lips wrapped around her nipple and my tongue stroked the hard peak. “That won’t work,” was her breathy protest.
I released her nipple and blew on it. “What won’t work?”
“You can’t seduce me into getting out of bed,” she replied.
I chuckled as I slipped my fingers between Julia’s legs to stroke her hot pussy. She immediately spread her legs to give me better access. “That’s not how I plan to get you out of bed,” I assured her as I slid a finger into her.
She whimpered and rocked her hips as I slid my finger in and out of her body. “Then what are you doing?”
“Just helping you wake up,” I said as I settled between her legs to glide my tongue across her clit with slow, leisurely strokes.
I couldn’t make out what she uttered under her breath, but it must have been a spell. I suddenly felt her magic sliding along my body.
“Fuck me, Sass,” I rasped out, my finger stilling inside of her. My mouth was nearly touching her clit, but I couldn’t do more than groan.
“Why don’t you lie back and let me take care of you this time?” she purred.
I didn’t want to give up control, but it seemed I had no choice. Julia’s magic stroked my dick like I imagined only a three-tongued demon could, and it was getting painful to lie on my stomach. I moved from between her legs and collapsed onto my back with my fist clenched at my side.
Julia got to her knees and helped me out of my boxers. “Do you like this spell, Gryph?”
“You’re killing me, Sass,” I ground out. Red hot magic stroked and squeezed my cock. It flowed around my entire body.
“You still haven’t answered my question,” she pushed, leaning over to run her tongue along my aching dick.
“Touch yourself,” I growled.
Her eyes locked with mine, and she seemed startled by my demand. “I want to watch you come. Slip your fingers between your legs and pleasure yourself.”
Remaining on her knees, she spread her legs and began to stroke her clit. All the while, her spell continued to torment me with pleasure that was almost too much to bear.
“Imagine my tongue is on you, S
ass,” I said in a strained voice. “You know how good my tongue feels.”
“Goddess, yes,” she panted out. “I love your tongue, Gryph.”
“Did you dream about me going down on you all those months we were apart?” I asked, groaning when her magic squeezed my dick so tight I almost exploded.
“So many times,” she confessed on a moan. “I dreamt of you touching me, tasting me, fucking me.”
“Did you touch yourself when you thought of me?” I asked.
“Yes,” she admitted, her eyes closing as her finger moved faster.
Her spell was influenced by the movements of her hand. The magic moved against my dick at a frantic pace. My body tensed and my hips lifted off the bed. We were both close to the edge. It was hot and intense, but it wasn’t enough.
“Condom,” I barely managed to growl.
Julia grabbed one and had it wrapped around my throbbing dick in less than a minute. Pushing Julia onto her back, I got to my knees and thrust into her tight body, groaning when I realized the spell was still working its magic on my dick.
“What the . . .” I began, my question ending on a ragged moan.
Chapter 49
Julia
I nearly screamed when Gryph thrust into my body. I knew the spell would continue working until Gryph found his release or I used a counterspell, but I hadn’t expected to feel the spell moving inside me along with Gryph’s dick.
We both held still as my heels pressed against his broad shoulders.
“The spell,” I panted out, my mind drawing a blank on the words to the counterspell.
Gryph’s only response was a growl as he began to move in my body. His strokes were slow, and I saw the strain on his face as he fought for control with the spell driving us both to the edge.
I moved my legs down to wrap around his hips and rocked against him. Still on his knees, Gryph reached forward to brush his thumb against my nipple. His eyes were locked on mine, watching my reaction as my own spell caressed my nipple, vibrating against it until I moaned.
When he squeezed my nipple, the strands of magic began to pulse around it. Even when Gryph removed his fingers, the magic continued to tease me. Satisfied with my reaction, Gryph repeated the process with my other nipple, leaving me writhing and whimpering with need.
I had no idea how he was doing it, but Gryph was manipulating my spell. His thrusts were slow, and his face was tense with the effort it took to remain in control. When his hand reached toward my clit, I caught his wrist. “It’s too much,” I whimpered.
“I feel you and your magic wrapped all around me,” he explained in a hoarse voice. “Let me share this with you.”
Unable to deny his desperate plea, I released his hand. As soon as Gryph’s fingers made contact with my clit, it felt like hot tongues were moving along my heated flesh. I made a sound somewhere between a scream and a whimper.
“Fucking perfect,” Gryph groaned as he thrust into my body harder.
“Yes,” I moaned.
With Gryph stretching my pussy and the magic caressing me all over, I was on sensation overload. The first pulses of my orgasm began, drawing a ragged groan from Gryph. They seemed to go on forever as they built in intensity. My body tightened and pulsed as Gryph growled and uttered words of praise.
Finally, I exploded around Gryph. I screamed and reached down to claw at his thighs, sending Gryph over the edge with a shout of completion.
For a short time, all I could hear was the blood pounding in my ears. I’d never come that hard. When I finally recovered some, I looked up to find Gryph still dazed.
“How did you do that?” I asked.
Gryph pulled out of my body, looking shaky as he got to his feet. “I’m not sure,” he admitted. “I guess it has to do with our magic bonding.”
“Witches and warlocks don’t share their power that way,” I insisted, rolling to my side to watch him as he disposed of the condom.
He turned to regard me with a curious expression. “I guess this is a good argument for witches and werewolves getting involved. That was intense.”
My eyes drifted shut, and I let out a contented sigh. “Yes, it was. Come back to bed.”
Gryph chuckled. “This was supposed to get you out of bed, Sass,” he reminded me.
“How is showing me all the amazing things you can do to me in bed going to convince me to get up?” I asked, allowing my eyes to drift shut.
“What if I promise to show you all the amazing things I can do to you in the shower?” he suggested.
My eyes opened, and I grinned. “I think that’s a good incentive to get out of bed.”
Chapter 50
Julia
“I know you want to protect me, baby, but it’s too dangerous,” I crooned as I cuddled Oliver close.
After hearing about what Desmond had done to his sister’s familiar, I’d decided it would be safer if Oliver stayed somewhere else. While the vampire subdivision was fairly secure, I wanted Oliver hidden where Desmond would never think to look for him.
“I can’t leave you,” Oliver told me. “I’ll be sad and bored without you and Gryph.”
“Maybe this isn’t a good idea,” I hedged.
“Your familiar will love visiting my mother,” Melina’s dad assured me. Despite his outer appearance of an overweight balding human, he was a very powerful demon lord. He went by Ralph, but I had no clue what his real name was. He didn’t like using his demon name. His mother was also very powerful. I’d been assured by Melina that her grandmother’s disposition was much less surly than Ralph’s. She was also one of the few who could handle watching Lucifer’s hellhounds. If she could handle hellhounds, my familiar should be a piece of cake.
“I’ll miss you and Gryph,” Oliver wailed.
Gryph reached out to scratch Oliver’s ears. “I’m going to miss you, too, but it’s just for a short time.”
“You need me to help protect Julia,” Oliver argued. “You said you needed me to help.”
“I know I did,” Gryph replied. “We both know Julia is a worrier, and if she’s worrying about you, she’ll be distracted. I need her focused.”
“Wait just a minute,” I interrupted. “Do you understand what my familiar is saying?”
Ralph gave an irritated grunt, or it could have been a happy grunt. It was hard to tell with Ralph. “You’re bonded to the werewolf, right?”
“I am,” I agreed. “I also know bonding with a warlock gives them the ability to understand a witch’s familiar.”
“She didn’t expect it to work with a werewolf,” I added.
“It seems like it would be easier for a werewolf to communicate with a dog,” Ralph remarked.
“I always had a vague understanding of what Oliver meant,” Gryph admitted. “Now, it’s just much easier. It’s like he’s speaking English.”
“English?” Oliver asked incredulously. “Why would I want to speak English? It’s a horrible language.”
“I know, baby,” I told him. “It just seems like you’re speaking English to us. You’re actually better at this than we are since you understand everyone.”
“I am very smart,” Oliver boasted.
“And modest,” Gryph added.
“Who needs modesty?” Oliver asked. “I know I’m cute and smart.”
“He makes a good point,” I agreed. “Are you sure your mother won’t mind watching him, Ralph?”
Ralph shook his head. “She’ll love having him around. My mother can understand all animals, so she’ll be able to talk to him.”
“Really?” I asked. “I had no idea there were demons who could do that.”
“Can you understand me?” Oliver asked Ralph.
“I can’t understand a word you say, mutt,” Ralph responded.
“You do understand me!” Oliver exclaimed happily.
Ralph glared at us. “You’d all better promise not to breathe a word about this. I don’t want annoying familiars chattering away at me all day and night. The lot o
f them never shut up.”
It was a struggle to stifle my giggles, while Oliver seemed to be contemplating whether he really needed to make that promise.
“There’s a steak in it for you if you keep your mouth shut,” Ralph told Oliver.
“I won’t tell a soul,” Oliver assured him.
“I want a steak,” Gryph grumbled.
“If you tell anyone, I’ll make sure your man parts are on the inside for the rest of your life,” Ralph threatened.
Gryph chuckled at the threat. “I see where Melina gets her charm from.”
Ralph grinned. “My girl certainly knows how to deal with those witches.”
“And everyone else,” I added. “Thank you again.” Not giving Ralph a chance to dodge me, I quickly kissed him on the cheek.
Ralph stood there, looking like he wasn’t sure if he should smite me or kiss me back. It was amusing when the soft side of the cranky demon popped up. “I’d better get going.”
After ten more minutes of teary goodbyes, Oliver left with Ralph. When the door closed, I let out a little sniffle.
“I hope he’ll be okay,” I said softly. “I’m not used to being away from him for more than a night or two.”
“With any luck, the police will find Desmond soon,” Gryph added as he slipped his arm around my shoulders. “Now that they know who to look for, it shouldn’t take long.”
“I hope you’re right,” I uttered softly. Unfortunately, I had little faith in the police to solve the case.
Chapter 51
Gryph
After leaving Oliver with Ralph, Julia had needed a distraction. With our mate bond complete, I sensed her sadness at being separated from Oliver for an indefinite period. I’d have liked to take her out somewhere to distract her, but I didn’t feel safe doing that while Desmond LaCroix was still out there. It made it harder to keep her safe in public with a shapeshifter after her. He could be posing as anyone. That meant I had to be more creative.
“Are you sure Ray won’t mind us using his pool?” Julia asked. “I know he offered, but maybe he was just trying to be neighborly while hoping we wouldn’t take him up on his offer.”
