Paul, separated from Hannah early in the story, embarks on a courageous journey to find her. Throughout his struggles he finds himself engaged in epic battles with Russian and socialist soldiers while learning once again to rely on the help of others in his efforts. Throughout the story Paul is faced with confronting past demons, finding his true patriotic self, and discovering that only one thing really matters in his new world—finding Hannah. The story builds in intensity leading to an enduring and climactic battle in the end, filled with personal loss and glorious redemption.

Factual political details, dating back to the 1930’s, are woven into the fabric of the novel in an effort to lead the reader to the conclusion that the destruction of the constitutional foundation of the United States started long ago. Many laws, Acts, judgments and amendments are discussed in detail demonstrating to the reader that the ultimate and complete erosion of the core of our democratic society has been occurring in front of our very eyes.

“Incoming!” I heard the yell from the back of the line. I turned to see five battle copters approaching from the rear of our formation. I could hear shots ringing out from the copters. Our men began scrambling for cover and smoke began to fill the air as chunks of ground flew up all around us from the impacting rounds of ammunition. You could easily discern the soldiers who were injured in last week’s battle. We were the ones hobbling along as best we could for cover. As I hobbled, I saw General Alexander fall down and grab at his wound from last week which I could see was bleeding again.

I jumped on top of him like he was a sandbag, drew my Glock from its holster and began firing at the approaching copter. General Alexander rolled over, pulled his Colt 1911 and also began firing. The two of us were firing relentlessly at the copter and could see our shots hitting. Yet, the copter continued toward us, firing rounds at us while chunks of dirt flew up all around us.

I began reloading my Glock 19, and I heard the familiar sound of a Winchester 94 firing and cycling. With that, the battle copter fell to the ground in a heap of flames and smoke. “Thanks Adam,” I said. He and Lily helped General Alexander and I up to our feet. We all began moving toward an old pickup truck on the side of the road that had been abandoned long ago and noticed another copter began coming our way. Gunshots were everywhere and pieces of fragmented metal were falling all around us as fifteen hundred soldiers fired at the copters that were attacking us.

As if the battle copters were not enough, I heard the undeniable sound of a tank coming from the east. “Damn it to hell. Can we ever have a few weeks without a fight?”

Adam replied, “Awww come on General, this is fun.”

General Alexander shot him a look that said I will kill you later. Then Alexander yelled out toward the rear of the line, “RPG, RPG, damn it I need an RPG.”

Incredulously, I heard the launch of an RPG from behind me. I turned and watched the trail of smoke the RPG left behind. It travelled through the air toward the Russian tank that approached us from the east and I could not help but think how fortunate we had been to meet up with General Alexander.

An incredibly loud “Ka-boom!” stopped the tank in its tracks. The turret lid opened for the Russians to escape the fire that raged inside the tank and General Alexander’s men were waiting for them, placing quick and efficient shots into their heads to eliminate the threat.

I turned behind me and saw another battle copter approaching, but this time I saw Abby shouldering what appeared to be a Kalishnikov AK-47, and then she began firing shots at the copter. I watched in amazement as the copter exploded into thousands of bits of metal. Abby, did not miss a beat, turned and began firing at another copter. Behind me, I heard another tank coming.

I turned to see the other tank which was firing a .50 caliber mounted gun in our direction. General Alexander began screaming again, “RPG, RPG, RPG Damn it.” I could see the veins bulging in the side of his neck as he was yelling.

Again, I saw a trail of smoke wafting over our heads as an RPG travelled toward, and stopped the T-95 tank. As General Alexander’s men quickly killed the Russian soldiers that exited the tank, I could hear the copters leaving the area.

As the smoke cleared, I could see Abby standing on a small hill behind us, firing more shots from her AK-47 at the retreating copter. “Well, she said she was going to fight with us next time,” Lily said, shaking her head in disbelief.

“Hannah!” I shouted, beginning to search for the love of my life. Off in the distance I could see her, holding Sally Anne whimpering in a childlike pose. I stopped, knowing they needed to be left alone, and turned to hobble toward Abby.

“Russian bastards didn’t expect me to start shooting back Dad” she said, with a big smile as I approached her.

“Damn girl, I thought you were my battlefield nurse?” I replied walking up to her.

I’ll be a nurse too Dad, but I’ve got to fight too,” she said.

I reached out to pat her on the shoulder in an affirmation when I heard it. My heart sank, because I knew what it meant. I had lost another one.

“Damn girl, that shit was wickedly cool and sexy as hell.”

I turned to see what little ruffian had his sights set on my little girl. I stumbled back and almost fell as I saw him approaching. “Holy mackerel,” I mumbled under my breath.

“Dad, this is Gaston,” Abby said, with a sheepish smile as the young man held out his right hand in an effort to shake my
hand.
