Signing her letter with a flourish, Grace set down her pen, turning to look at her husband with a smile.

“I am. Did they persuade the admiral to join us?”

“They did, although he claims he will leave us to climb to the top of Mountview Hill alone.” He snorted with laughter. “Poor fellow is sadly misguided if he thinks he can avoid the task so easily. We are to have a picnic at the top, and how can we do that if he is not there with us?”

Grace stood, wincing a little at the ankle which still, even after all these weeks, caused her pain when she moved too quickly or put too much weight on it.

“I will walk with him. We can take the journey slowly and join you sprightly youngsters at the top in our own sweet time.”

“Sprightly youngsters?” Arthur roared with laughter. “I shall tell Devereaux that. He is become quite the staid old man of late, and will rejoice at being called young by one as youthful as you, Mrs Sudbury!”

Grace laughed, still thrilled to hear her new name on her new husband’s lips.

Folding her letter, she sealed it quickly and blew out her candle, passing the letter to her husband.

“Send this to London, will you? I need to find my wrap.”

“Your wish is my command,” Arthur replied, dropping a sly kiss on his pretty young wife’s cheek. “But I do not think you will need a wrap. It is quite bright and warm outside.”

Grace nodded, glancing once more towards the window and appreciating just how bright and sun-filled the room, and her life, had become.
