Chapter One
Janie
It was Friday afternoon when I left my office to drive across campus to the Red Door to meet Michael. I couldn’t help but appreciate the old historical buildings that lined Main Street as I drove through campus. I loved living in the sleepy little Virginia college town. It was hard to believe I would be graduating in a few weeks. The little town where I grew up was only an hour away, but after spending four years in undergrad and another two years in graduate school in Springfield, the place felt like home to me.
For some reason, I was feeling completely out of sorts. I couldn’t stop thinking about what I had seen in Professor Marsh’s office earlier. I should have been excited for the weekend—I should have been excited to spend the weekend with my boyfriend, Michael. But between what happened with him last night and the episode with Professor Marsh, all I really wanted to do was get back to my apartment to my roommates, who happened to also be my best friends. But if I cancelled, Michael would be pissed.
I pulled into the parking lot of the Red Door bar. It was THE bar for early drinking on campus. As soon as I saw Michael’s BMW, I was feeling better. Maybe last night was a fluke and I could fix things. We had been dating for almost a year and I didn’t want to screw it up. It was time to settle down. It was my last year of graduate school and with graduation looming in a couple of weeks, it seemed like I needed a plan for my future. At least, that’s what my brain was telling me. Michael was stable, someone my parents would love. He was in his third year of law school and he already had a job lined up with a major firm. He was the perfect guy to marry. My heart on the other hand, was telling me something completely different.
Taking in a deep breath, I looked in the rearview mirror. I smoothed my dark shoulder length hair and took out my compact to rub some powder on my nose before swiping on light pink strawberry lip gloss. I stepped out of the car and smoothed my skirt. It was a flowy short black lace skater skirt and I had paired it with a white tank top, black gladiator sandals, and a denim jacket. Of course, Michael wouldn’t like it—it wasn’t sophisticated enough for his taste. But I didn’t care when I put it on this morning because I was still mad at him.
I slung my heavy purse over my shoulder as I walked in the Red Door. I stopped for a second to scan the bar for Michael, but the first people I saw were Professor Marsh and Ryan O’Conner in a booth together. Ryan’s cheeks were rosy, and they both were laughing. Professor Marsh noticed me first and I tried my best to give him a friendly wave, which he returned. Ryan also waved also as soon as he saw me. My cheeks heated and I hoped that in the dark light of the bar, neither could tell that I was blushing. I looked around some more and noticed Michael sitting at a small table for two near the bar. I walked up behind him and covered his eyes with my hands, kissed his cheek, leaned down close to his ear and whispered, “Hey, you.”
He flinched when I touched him, then grabbed one of my arms and pulled me around beside him. “Janie, sit down,” he growled.
Of course, he thought it was inappropriate that I was kissing him in public, but when I sat across from him, I could see in his eyes that it was more than that. He took a deep breath as if he was about to say something, but a beautiful blonde server came up beside us and asked what we wanted to drink.
I ordered a Jack and Coke, just to irritate Michael, who didn’t think whiskey was a lady’s drink.
He ordered a glass of chardonnay.
As soon as the server disappeared from the table, Michael asked how my day went.
I wanted to tell him everything, it would be great if we could have a good laugh about it. But I knew it wouldn’t go that way, so I just told him that it was the same as usual. I asked about his day and he gave me a brief rundown of each of his classes and I tried to pretend that I was interested. Something was off with him, he was very distant. The server came back with our drinks and he looked at her with a dazzling smile and thanked her. Wow, it had been months since he had looked at me like that.
Michael took a sip of his wine and then held the stem loosely in his fingers as he swirled the glass and stared at it.
I took the opportunity to gulp down half my drink, somehow knowing that I needed it.
“Janie,” he said seriously as he looked up at me. “I’ve thought a lot about this and I just don’t think we’re working out.”
I looked up at him from my Jack and Coke. “Really? Okay. Just like that Michael? Is this about last night?” I couldn’t help the sarcastic laugh that fell from my lips. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know it would be such a big deal for you. You didn’t like it. I get it. It won’t happen again.” My cheeks heated and I wanted to be anywhere but there at that exact moment.
“It isn’t just about last night, Janie, I just don’t think we’re compatib
le.” He paused for a moment as if he were contemplating the most important question on the planet and then whispered “sexually.”
He said the word ‘sexually’ like it was the most forbidden word in the English vocabulary. I wanted to scream at him. Of course, we aren’t sexually compatible. You haven’t given me an orgasm in six months and we barely see each other. But I didn’t say that. I sat there, trying to come to terms with everything. And then I just uttered the words, “Okay, Michael.”
He looked up at me and said in a somber tone, “See you around, Janie.” He picked his phone up off the table and walked out.
I scrambled through my big-ass purse looking for money to pay our drink tab and had to use the twenty-dollar bill that was carefully folded in one of the pockets of my wallet for emergencies only. I guessed it was somewhat of an emergency. What a prick, he invited me here for a drink to break up with me and he didn’t even have the decency to pay the tab.
As I drove to my apartment across campus, I wondered if I was somehow the cause of our break up. I felt like crying—we had been together for almost a year. I didn’t cry at first because there was a small part of me that was relieved. Even though I knew I shouldn’t, I replayed the events of last night over in my mind.
We had just come home from dinner with some of Michael’s friends from law school and when we got back to his apartment, I followed him into his bedroom where he kicked off his shoes and jumped on the bed and grabbed the remote and turned the TV on. SportsCenter blared through the speakers of the TV and I kicked off my shoes and crawled into bed next to him. Don’t judge me. I was horny. We hadn’t had sex in a couple of weeks. So, as he watched TV, I moved my hand across his chest and stomach, eventually making my way down to his dick. It wasn’t hard, but after I rubbed it for a while, I could feel it coming to life. I unbuttoned and unzipped his pants and he laid still while I kissed my way down his stomach to his dick.
I had only gone down on him a few times before last night and it was usually after we had both had a lot to drink. He had never gone down on me and I was hoping that if I got him worked up enough he would. Before last night, I had always let him initiate sex. I had only been with one other guy before Michael. It was my high school boyfriend and we were both inexperienced, but it had always turned me on when he took charge. The problem was, Michael didn’t seem to want sex as often as I did.
Even after my lips wrapped around Michael’s dick, he still wasn’t fully erect, but I could tell he seemed into it because he thrust his hips up towards me as I sucked him. I wanted to get him really worked up, so I grabbed his jeans and underwear to pull them off, so I could get better access to him. He even lifted his ass so that I could get his pants off. I thought he was into it.
After tossing his pants on the floor, I crawled back between his legs and went to work. He still wasn’t completely hard. I moved my hand over his balls and he spread his legs a little wider and groaned. My fingers moved underneath them, and I began to rub my finger between his ass cheeks.
I had read an article in Cosmo that said guys like it when you penetrate their ass with a finger during oral sex and it had turned me on thinking about it and I wanted to try it. He squirmed when my finger brushed against his hole, but I couldn’t tell if he liked it or not. I decided to go for it and I gently pressed in the tip of my index finger. I immediately felt his dick deflate in my mouth and he jumped up, “What the fuck Janie? Stop!”
I jerked my hand away. I could feel my cheeks turning red. “Shit! Sorry Michael.” I wanted to laugh it off. I looked up at him with a grin on my face, but he looked pissed. I was beyond embarrassed. “God, I’m really sorry,” I said laughing, “I just read this article in Cosmo and…”
He interrupted, “Just forget it Janie. It’s late and we both have to be up early in the morning.” I watched as he grabbed his jeans and underwear off the floor and put them back on. Jumping off the bed, I ran in the bathroom and washed my hands and face. I couldn’t believe he was mad. I didn’t care that he hadn’t liked it, but I couldn’t believe he was acting like such an ass about it. I walked back out of the bathroom and said, “Hey, I’m just gonna go home. We’ll probably sleep better in our own beds.”
He didn’t look at me or take his eyes off the TV. “That’s probably a good idea.”
I was so pissed when I left his apartment that I had decided that I wasn’t going to speak to him again until he apologized for over-reacting. It was ridiculous. So, when I got a text from him this morning, asking me to meet him at the Red Door for a drink after work, I figured he was inviting me there to apologize—it never even crossed my mind that he was going to break up with me.
When I pulled into my apartment complex. It hit me. I felt angry, embarrassed, and humiliated all at the same time. God, was I that bad in bed? He acted like I was some sexual deviant or something. Tears were pouring down my cheeks. Jesus, maybe I was.
I thought about what had happened today with Professor Marsh and Ryan. I was glad my roommates wouldn’t be home, I would have to tell them that Michael and I broke up, but I was too embarrassed to tell them why. I was not sure why though, they had always freely shared all their sexual adventures with me and I was sure they had done worse.
Jake and Ethan had become my best friends. We moved in together our sophomore year of college and had been living together ever since. We all got accepted into the MBA program so when we graduated, we just kept the apartment. We’d be getting our master’s degree in a couple of weeks, but we hadn’t discussed what we were going to do after that.
I smiled when I thought about the day I met them, the day they showed me the apartment for the first time. Jake and Ethan had hung a flyer in the Student Center advertising for a roommate. When I saw it, I decided to check it out. I hadn’t thought about living with guys before, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. I had had my fill of girl drama with my last roommate.
When I met the guys for the first time so that they could show the apartment to me, I felt an instant connection with them. The three of us just clicked. Jake was hilarious, and Ethan was sweet. They both played on the rugby team and had been best friends since middle school. The only reservation I had was that both of them were freaking gorgeous. Jake had auburn hair and sparkling emerald eyes and Ethan’s hair was dark and his eyes were gray and sexy as hell. They were both tall, over six feet, and about the same height. Jake was slightly bigger than Ethan, but they were both incredibly built and sculpted. I wondered, when I met them, if I could live with them without constantly thinking about jumping one or both of them. I decided to take the risk.
The first few weeks after I moved in, they both had been relentless flirts. Both asked me out and I laughed it off. I found out very quickly that they were both huge manwhores. They were with a different woman every weekend and sometimes they swapped. Sometimes I still wondered how many women they had shared. It didn’t really bother me because they were always up front with the girls and they wouldn’t sleep with them if they thought the girl was looking for a boyfriend. But the biggest reason I wouldn’t go out with either of them is that I couldn’t choose between them. I was attracted to them both and I didn’t want to lose either one.
As I grabbed my purse and stepped out of my car, I tried to wipe the tears off my cheeks, but they just kept flowing. I was glad it was Friday night. I had no doubts that I would have the apartment to myself. Jake and Ethan always went out on Friday nights. I was looking forward to a night to myself. I wanted to get drunk and cry. I’ll steal one of Ethan’s bottles of wine and pay him for it later, I thought to myself, as I unlocked the door.
As soon as I opened the door, I heard laughter. Shit they’re home. They were sitting on the couch playing some game on Xbox. I immediately dropped my purse on the floor and began to desperately wipe the tears from my face. Neither turned around, thank goodness. I needed to get myself together. “That you Janiebug?” Ethan asked without looking back at me. I ran to the fridge and opened
the door, so I’d have a good reason to keep my back to them. “Yeah,” I managed to say. I cleared my throat and somehow stopped my tears. “What’re you two bitches doing home anyway? Shouldn’t you be out at a bar searching for hoes or something?”
Ethan laughed, and Jake said, “Eh. We just weren’t feeling it tonight. What about you? I thought you were supposed to be spending the weekend with Michael getting your freak on.”
I felt tears welling in my eyes again. I wondered if I could slip in my room and make up some excuse about having a headache or being tired. When I didn’t answer immediately, Ethan spoke, “Janie?”
“Yeah. We broke up.” I thought I could get it out without my voice shaking. But I didn’t manage. Ethan’s arms were wrapped around me in about two seconds.
Chapter Two
Jake
Ethan noticed she was crying first. As soon as he jumped off the couch, I tossed down the Xbox controller and followed him into the kitchen. Her eyes were red and there were tears streaming down her cheeks. Her perfect little nose was red on the tip. Even crying, she managed to look beautiful.
I’d thought she was beautiful since the first day I met her. She had this silky dark hair, almost as dark as Ethan’s, that hung straight down to her shoulders. It was cut longer on the sides and shorter in the back and she had these cute bangs that swept sideways across her forehead. You could get lost in her big round chocolate eyes when she batted those long eyelashes at you. A few freckles were smattered across her nose and cheeks. You couldn’t even see them when she wore makeup, but I loved it when I caught a rare glimpse of them. Her lips were this sexy pale pink color and when she smiled, these sexy little dimples appeared. Her body was perfect. She was just the right amount of curvy. She could seriously be on the cover of one of those ‘Girls Next Door’ calendars.
