“And it still can be, Matthews.” I ran my finger down his arm. “Someday, when you and Wren are back together again…”
“We broke up.” He lifted the corner of his lip. “She was a distraction; a way to take my mind off you.” His honesty hit me like a ton of bricks. He ran his hand up my arm. “Don’t get me wrong, she’s a great person, and we have a lot in common, but the only time I kiss her is when you’re around.”
Was that what Carter was to me? A distraction from my true feelings? No. I did have real feelings for my boyfriend, but now they were all muddled and twisted. Partly, from his secrets and lies, and partly from the lies I told myself about Brek.
His hand moved from my arm down to my hip. It felt right to have him massaging me as he pitched closer, drawing his face down to mine; his blue eyes barely visible in the darkness of the room. I inhaled sharply.
“Hey, guys.”
Brek backed away. My heart raced.
“I couldn’t sleep. Do you want to play some Mortal Kombat?”
Had Carter seen anything? The room was so dark.
“Yes!” I hopped off the couch and opened the cabinet below the television to remove the game system.
The distraction became a welcome relief. I fought off the feelings that raced through my heart with flying kicks and foot sweeps. The tension of Brek’s frustration taken out on Carter in the final battle that lasted well into the night.
