“You are trying to change the topic aren’t you?”

“Well, maybe,” she said naughtily “But I am worried about you.”

“Tell you what? Let’s talk about me on a different drinking day. It’s about Robin today”.

“Robbie,” she corrected before reluctantly agreeing to my suggestion “Ok, it’s a deal.”

I took another sip from my glass and looked around for the waitress who had served us. I loved visiting this place whenever I was in town; it reminded me of how far I had come career wise but also had a bittersweet ring to it. It was where I met Marisol, the mother to my adorable kids and my sweet loving wife. I use the word “sweet”, sarcastically. I could still see the innocent look she had when she came to serve me a beer. Her outfit was skimpy as was the requirement of the club and her perfect hourglass shape was inviting.

“There he is,” Sarah jolted me from my reverie, and I looked into the direction her finger was pointing at. I spotted a young man in khaki shorts and a white fitting tee shirt walking towards us after Sarah waving her over. He looked like the neat and clean type; his hands were deep in his pocket, and he had a confident smile plastered on his face.

Out of courtesy, I got to my feet and offered him my hand after he had placed a loving peck on my sister’s cheek. His grip was firm, and his eyes are searching as he had a seat and stared straight into my eyes. He looked suspicious, almost as if he was hiding something. There was something awfully wrong with this man; I couldn’t really tell what but my gut feeling was not giving in. For the sake of my darling sister, I fought the urge to roughen him up and resumed my seat.

“Robbie, this is my brother, David,” Sarah introduced us “David this is Robbie.”

This guy must be hitting it really good to make her smile like that. He made my sister look like a blonde, wide eyes, perky lips, giggling uncontrollably, feeling shy and nervous, the whole package. The only thing missing was drool coming out of her left side of the mouth, and he could easily pass off as her pimp.

“Nice to meet you,” I said and was more than grateful for the bad lighting in the club. At least, that way he could not see the sneer that went across my face when I told that lie.

“Nice to meet you too,” he answered. His smile was sincere, almost as if he was in on a joke that the rest of us knew nothing about. I downed the contents of my glass and was just about to order another one but saw that Robbie was up to something. He whispered in the manager’s ear, and I turned my gaze to my small sister questioningly.

“You guys mind if we change seats?” He asked, “You know a less noisy place where we can all get to know each other better?”

Fuck no! This guy was really trying to impress me; he was angling for the VIP sector?

“Sure,” I agreed and got to my feet.

We followed the manager to a quieter booth where there was a champagne bottle waiting for us on the table. I sat opposite the two love birds but did not look impressed by the cheap show. I called it cheap because it was all cliché; I wish Sarah could fuck someone with originality for once in her life. I almost felt nauseous when I looked in her direction and saw how she was all over the guy. Their arms were intertwined as Sarah hang on to every word that came out of his mouth.

“So David, I hear you are an FBI Agent as well?” he tried to make small talk with me, and I let him for the sake of my love dosed sister.

  “You heard right.”

The champagne was some expensive shit; I could tell by the way it bubbled in my mouth and smoothed sailed down my throat. The fucker was rich, so what? Being rich didn’t mean shit to me; this was my chance of picking his brains.

“I can see where Sarah got her tough side from,” he went on to compliment.

Rookie move, if he only knew how many men who have tried to get into my sister's panties have used that line.

“Sarah was born tough,” I corrected him “I only cemented her personality.”

“And I respect that about her.”

  “Do you really?”

  “Yes sir, I do.”

“Do you know what kind of woman Sarah is?”

I could feel my sister’s eyes burning in my direction; she would probably stomp on my foot as a sign of shutting me up.

  “Enlighten me,” he said bravely.

“Sarah is the kind of woman who does not need a man in her life. She can do anything you know, change a flat, fix a bulb heck she can even mow the lawn”, I said “Sarah never bends to anyone’s rules but hers.

“So what are you trying to say, David?”

“What I am trying to say, Robin,” I paused for Sarah to hear that I had intentionally called him by a name she didn’t want “Or rather, what I am trying to ask is what are you bringing to the table?”

I had the fucker where I wanted him, fidgeting and uneasy. The bad lighting in the club did not allow me to see his facial expression clearly.

“Come on David,” Sarah intervened. It was the first time she had spoken up that night, which was very unlikely to her.

“Sarah, let the man speak unless he does not have any balls,” I answered “Or is he hiding them behind the expensive show?”

Robbie sat up in his chair, let go of my sister’s arm and sipped from his glass. He then looked me in the eye as I eagerly waited for his response.

“Do you want to know what I am bringing to the table?”

“I just asked that,” I reminded him rudely.

“I bring love to the table,” he went on “I bring compassion, affection, passion and I bring me. The whole of me”.

“You are one of those aren’t you?” I asked and chuckled before turning my attention back to Sarah “You got yourself one of them lovey Dovey goons.”

“I am one of ‘those’” the last word he said with much contempt and air quotes. I still had a lot of questions to ask him, but I decided to give Sarah a break. I had a feeling it might slowly lead to slander territory and judging by the way he was throwing money around; he must have expensive ass lawyers on speed dial.

I sat back, relaxed and nursed my liquor before taking another sip from it. It was not yet over; I still needed to carry a background search on this fool. I watched how my sister was all over him; looking like a damn high school girl and it got me nauseated.

“I have to go,” I announced abruptly as I got to my feet “I have an early morning.”

“So soon? It’s not yet even midnight”, Sarah complained.

“I am getting old dear sis. It was nice meeting you Robbie”, I lied again after giving him my attention and offering him my hand to shake “Walk me to the car, Sarah?”

“Will be right back,” she said and got to her feet too. We walked out of the club and into the night air where it was less noisy and cooler.

“So what did you think?” she asked as she intertwined her arm with mine.

Why did she have to ask me that now? When was I tipsy and honest?

  “I don’t like him.”

  “I could tell.”

“There is something about him that rubs me the wrong way. I just can’t put a finger on it, but that guy is up to no good”.

“You never like any of the men I date David,” she protested.

“It’s not my fault that you have shitty taste, Sarah.”

“I could say the same thing about you,” she answered, and I knew she was right. Who was I to judge her boyfriend when I couldn’t put a leash on my whorish wife?

“Touché,” I answered as I got into my car, that was the thing about Sarah and I. We always told each other the truth, and neither of us got mad at the other for saying it at least not outwardly.

“Drive safe,” she called after me as soon as I had my seat belt on and started my car.

“I will, goodnight,” I answered, “Tell Robin to go fuck himself.”

  “I won’t, goodnight David.”

I let out a chuckle as I drove away, the liquor had made me horny, and I wished I could get a cheap whore to blow me. Thought about the w
ork I had piled up for me the next day made me change my mind on that. I had to get some rest and return the one thousand and one phone calls and vulgar voice messages from my ‘darling’ wife.
