“He’ll get over it,” Kyle said.

“I feel bad, though. I thought he and I were friends.”

“Jerry doesn’t know what it means to be a friend, Zoe.”

He pulled her into his arms. “I must confess that I’m glad you’re no longer working with him. You don’t need to deal with his insecurities on a daily basis. The man is talented, but he just doesn’t believe in himself. He wants to blame everyone else when things don’t go his way.”

“Well, now we don’t ever have to worry about Jerry again,” Zoe murmured. “He’ll find another designer to groom. I’ll always be grateful to him for everything he taught me.”

“I don’t want to talk about Jerry Prentice anymore.”

“What would you like to do?” she asked.

Leading her to the bedroom, he said, “I have a few ideas....”

  Epilogue

The rainy night in New York was perfect for staying inside and enjoying a quiet dinner. Soft contemporary jazz floated through the apartment, accompanied by the soft patter of raindrops on the balcony.

The sound of footsteps echoed on the hardwood floors leading upstairs, dissolving into silence as the expensively clad feet landed on plush carpet, moving with purpose.

The door at the end of the second floor opened to reveal a room with photographs and newspaper clippings of the Hamilton family decorating the walls. Pictures of Roger and Lila at different events and venues were pinned up neatly. Below them, various photos of their children were plastered in place.

A gloved hand traced the outline of Bailey’s face before moving on to a head shot of Brianna. The next photo, one of Kyle, captured and held the attention of the person gazing at the pictures. On the desk nearby, a scrapbook containing years of articles on the Hamilton family lay open. A stack of more recent photos lay beside a tabloid article of Bailey’s disappearance.

Many years had gone into following this family—years of searching for skeletons in their closets. So far, there had been no success on that end. There had to be something to use against them, but nothing had been discovered yet.

“This is far from over. I’m not going to give up. I’m going to find a way to destroy all of the Hamiltons...by any means necessary.”
