State of Emergency: Jack Emery 2 Page 27

by Steve P Vincent

  “Two are enough.”

“Indeed.” McGhinnist laughed. “Keeping an eye on the review will be your first job, but after that I’ve got some other things in mind.”

  “Fine. When do I start?”

“Well, I’d actually planned to announce it in about…” McGhinnist checked his watch. “An hour? I have to say something at the State of the Union.”

Jack stared. He hadn’t expected his appointment to be quite so public, quite so soon. “Okay, sir.”

  “Bill.”

  “Okay, Bill.” Jack laughed.

“Plus I’ve got a medal or two to pin on your chest.”

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

  Vanessa Pratt. My everything.

My Praetorian Guard is the beta readers who help me carve out the worst of the excesses and missteps, while amplifying the explosions and intrigue. Gerard Burg, Dr Kirstie Barry, Andrew McLaughlin, Emily Swann and Ashley Pratt have my thanks. Special thanks to Dr James Barry, my go to guy on all things Middle East.

Giant high-five to the Momentum team – Joel Naoum, Tara Goedjen, Ashley Thomson, Patrick Lenton and Michelle Cameron. They are the Beatles of Australian publishing and I love every second working with such a dynamic and energetic bunch. I appreciate all of their hard work and look forward to more adventures.

Haylee Nash at Pan Macmillan plucked me off “the pile” and dropped me in a bucket of deadlines, courtesy of a three-book run. She has my thanks for all of the support and for the belief she shows in my writing. She’s also wonderful to work with. I wish her all the best with the little one due about now.

I get the best editing and cover design in the business. Dip of the lid to my editor, Kylie Mason, who did a great job yet again. She’s a fantastic wing-woman and I treasure her input. She made the book better and Jack can’t wait to spend more time in her capable hands. Thanks also to Xou Creative, for once again rocking the cover.

I need to also mention the other authors, reviewers and boosters who have accepted me into their community with a giant warm group hug. I’ve been blown away by the advice, generosity and good fun that has come my way, whether over drinks or online. I’ll do my best to pay it forward.

A small army of family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances have encouraged and supported me since this adventure began. There’s too many to name, but all I can say is thanks. This can be a lonely business but it’s nice to have such a great bunch to share the excitement with.

Finally, thanks to readers who enjoyed The Foundation enough to stick with Jack on this ride. I hope you enjoyed it. To the new arrivals, welcome!

ABOUT NATIONS DIVIDED: JACK EMERY 3

Peace has been decades in the making, but chaos is just the press of a button away.

Jack Emery is happier than he has been in a long time. Nobody has shot at him or tried to blow him up for years, and he's learned to love the job he thought he'd hate: Special Advisor to the President of the United States.

But nothing can prepare Jack for the work to come. As America continues to heal from self-inflicted wounds, an ambitious President McGhinnist draws closer to achieving the impossible: peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

As the countdown to peace reaches zero, a desperate group of hardline Israelis invoke the Sampson Option, a secret protocol that will eradicate the peace agreement and pave the way for the destruction of America and the Middle East.

Jack has learned the hard way that when a crisis knocks, you don't always get the chance to ignore it.
