Chapter One
Indigo Windsor stood at the entry to the big tent and sighed with happiness. It was one thing to draw plans and diagrams about how decorations would look, but something else again to see them all finally in place. Fortunately, they looked great, even better than she’d hoped.
She walked down one side of the tent staring at the walls and then stood exactly in the center of it and turned slowly in a complete circle. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Indigo smiled with relief.
Indigo had been all through school with Chloe Jenner, the only other female werewolf shape-shifter her own age she’d known.
Well, all through school until Chloe had left at the end of tenth grade. Chloe lived way out in the desert, and the commute was a nightmare. Indigo couldn’t even imagine spending almost two hours a day just to get to school. In fact, she was pretty sure she might never have gone to school at all had she lived on the Jenners’ cactus farm.
Indigo’s family lived here in Towler, and she’d made friends with other girls over the years. But they were human, and her friendship with Chloe, even though they only saw each other a couple of times a year now, was extra special.
She’d never really paid any attention to Chloe’s three older brothers. The oldest one, Tekoa, was kind of bossy, but Reuben and Gideon she’d mostly ignored. Not now though. Oh my, no, not now. Reuben had turned into the most delicious man she’d seen in a long time. His blond hair was too long for a man, but damn, it was sexy. And his blue eyes. Oh yum. Dark and sparkling in the desert heat.
Indigo had another new friend now as well, Jasmine. Jaz was a human who’d mated Hunter Wishram and Damien Hall. The Wishrams had gone to school in Burton, so she’d never met them, but there were five brothers, all of them tall, dark, and delicious. The most delicious one of all was Stone. He was a quiet man, which was so calm and soothing in the midst of the noise and laughter of this huge pack gathering. Oh yes, she wouldn’t mind getting up close and personal with Stone and Reuben. The Supreme Alpha of North America had said ménages were permitted, and it sure looked to Indigo that Chloe was taking advantage of that ruling with Forest Wishram and Nyander Zaffre, so who was Indigo to complain? She just needed to give Reuben and Stone a gentle nudge to let them know she’d appreciate some two-on-one time with them both.
Shaking her head to dislodge her erotic thoughts, Indigo pulled out her cell phone and took some pictures of her decorations for the masquerade ball. All too soon they’d be starting this get-together, and then who knew what would happen to the decorations? Right now they were shiny and perfect.
The giant tent had twenty tables set up, each with ten chairs. The tables all had deep red paper tablecloths and five black and five white masks for people to wear. Around the inside walls of the tent, up high, were rows of tiny white lights and more paper masks hanging up, red, black, and white. At the front of the tent was a stage with a podium for the Alpha to emcee the event and then the dance floor.
Right up under the roof in the center were enough red, black, and white balloons for all the children to each have one. But for now they were safely out of reach. Decorating the tent early so everyone could
see and admire it was fine. Having the children play with their treats and destroy them before the event was not.
Indigo’s work for the pack gathering was officially done. Chloe had put her in charge of decorating the huge tent and the two smaller tents, one for the children and the other for seniors. The kids’ tent was filled with DVDs, board games, and a ping-pong table. The seniors had tea and coffee machines and comfortable chairs. There was also more than enough food for a hungry wolf pack to eat.
Indigo knew that after the party was over everyone would help tear down the campsite, and she’d be involved in that, but her role had been the design and implementation of the decorations, and that was done. And it looked good. So now she was free to check out Reuben and Stone. They looked mighty good as well.
She turned and walked out of the tent. It was almost lunchtime on Friday. Officially the gathering didn’t start until evening, but looking around, Indigo couldn’t imagine that anyone hadn’t already arrived. The pack was just under two hundred people strong, and without actually counting everyone, it sure looked to her as if that many people were here.
Many of them had pitched tents on the Alpha’s land in an area designated for camping. Some lived in town, like her family, and a few others, particularly some of the older members of the pack, were staying in the Towler Hotel or with friends in town. But, yes, looking around at the crowd now, she felt certain everyone must be here. Indigo wondered if someone had actually done a roll call. Or maybe the Alpha would know everyone’s name and know if a family still hadn’t arrived. Since most people had to travel across the Nevada desert to get here, and it was July and hot, she supposed someone ought to be checking that everyone did arrive safely.
As she stared around the throng of people, she noticed the Alpha coming out of his house, marching purposefully toward the meals area and the barbecue pit, followed by Chloe, with a huge grin on her face, Forest, and Ny. It looked like something was about to happen now, and Chloe was happy, so it was all good. Not that Indigo could guess what was about to take place. According to her instruction sheet, nothing was due to happen yet, although since everyone seemed to be here…Agh. She’d find out soon enough.
Wolfric jumped up onto a folding chair and raised his arms into the air. Instantly the noise and laughter of the pack was silenced, spreading out in a ripple from the barbecue zone and through the campground to the area where a group of teenage boys were playing a ball game.
As the Alpha stood there, people hurried from the distant areas of the campground to hear what he would say. Children gathered around their families in silence, and even Jaz’s huge dog, Phideaux, dropped to the ground by her side and sat waiting.
“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first Nevada Desert Werewolf Pack Gathering in far too many years. First, I want to thank Chloe Jenner for conceiving the idea of restarting our gatherings.”
Wolfric paused, and people clapped politely. Indigo gave Chloe a thumbs-up, but Chloe was looking at the ground and blushing.
“Welcome to my land. Our pack is spread widely over a huge area of desert. Let these few days be a time of getting to know those whose home is distant from your own. Share ideas as well as stories. Develop the friendships that are so important to us, that link us together by more than just our blood, so that, as a pack, we may grow closer together and more willing to collaborate and cooperate than we were a week ago.”
Indigo glanced around the crowd. Most people were gazing at the Alpha, but some were looking around, nodding and smiling at other people. It was a weird feeling that there were families here whose names she didn’t even know, yet they were all members of the same pack. Indigo determined that before the event was over she’d have memorized everyone’s name and face, maybe even learned a little bit about each family group.
“After we’ve eaten lunch, I’d like the head of each family to meet with me in my office so we can talk though issues that affect us all. This evening, over a cookout, we’ll have a much more social time of getting to know each other. This weekend is all about a mini-vacation and having fun. But, in these days of multi-tasking, let’s also keep in mind there are many things we can learn from each other and share with each other as well. Once again, welcome, everyone.”
The Alpha jumped down to the ground, and people clapped their hands, thanking him for his welcome. Indigo looked at all the happy, smiling faces. The pack was already having fun, but she thought they’d take their Alpha’s words to heart and help each other if they could as well.
The first thing she needed to do was get to know the totally delectable Reuben Jenner and Stone Wishram better. Much better. Up-close-and-personal better.
She swiveled on her heels, scanning the crowd. Where were they?
* * * *
As the second youngest of the five Wishram sons, Stone had grown up longing for peace, repose, and silence. The best way to find it was alone out in the desert, away from his endlessly noisy and energetic siblings. Sometimes he wondered how his parents had managed to rear five boys, all born within six years, without murdering a few of them.
But now, inside six months, his next oldest brother, Hunter, had met and mated Jasmine Picton, and then his oldest, and by the far the bossiest brother, Forest, had met and fallen in love with Chloe Jenner. Stone himself was ready to look around for a mate. Since there were far more shape-shifter males born than females, he knew it was likely he’d have to share a woman, just as his brothers were doing. That didn’t bother him. When a boy was born fourth in a family of five sons, sharing things was engrained in his psyche from the get-go.
That was another reason he’d become the one who roamed the desert, hunting for food, gathering desert fruits and berries in season, and caring for the land as needed. At first he’d accompanied his father, but by the time he was fourteen, he’d been the primary hunter-gatherer in their family. With so many hungry mouths to feed, locating and euthanizing one of the wild bighorn sheep with a broken leg, or one that had been injured while escaping from a predator and bringing it home for meat, was an important part of the family economy.
Stone also followed his father’s habit of killing any dangerous critters that ventured too close to their house. Rattlesnake chili was a family favorite meal, and there were other animals, including wild rodents, that made useful additions to their diet. So, for Stone, it was a win-win situation. More food for the family and the silence and peace of the desert for him.
He’d been more than willing to come to this pack gathering though. Yes, it would be more people gathered together in one place than he’d seen since his high school graduation, but he knew it was time the pack assembled. How could they truly be one pack when they’d never met most of the other members in it? The nature of the desert was such that families spread out far apart, making their homes where there was water and the means to survive. His parents had established a gas station at Junctionville. Actually, his family pretty much was Junctionville, but there was enough custom from passersby to enable the entire family to make a living there.
And now he was ready to look for a mate. A woman he could love and one who would complete and fulfill him. Someone who he’d wake up beside every morning and who would accept and understand him for himself. Someone he could cherish and serve for the rest of their lives.
Someone like Indigo Windsor, perhaps.
Stone was standing on the outer edges of the crowd. Now he turned slowly until he could look directly at her without appearing to stare. Of all the women here, she was the one he’d been attracted to immediately. Well, he’d only been here a couple of days, helping get everything set up, but Indigo had a bright, happy laugh and the ability to make those working with her laugh as well. That was so important. Work wasn’t a chore when people were enjoying themselves.
She was maybe five six, five seven, with shoulder-length brown hair, currently tied in a neat ponytail, huge dark brown eyes, and a curvaceous figure he wouldn’t mind wrapping in his arms. Well, except that her fathe
r and brother likely would have something to say about that if he tried to hold her. But damn, she looked enticing.
As he scanned the crowd, Stone noticed one of Chloe’s brothers staring at her as well. He looked harder at the man and identified him as Reuben, the middle brother. In that case they had something in common. They both wanted Indigo, and they both had a passel of brothers. Like the rest of his family, Reuben’s hair was blond, but it was long, too long for a man really, and his eyes were blue.
Stone assessed Reuben. From what he knew of the Jenners, they had a profitable cactus farm, and all were good, hard-working people. Certainly Chloe seemed to be an independent person who knew how to deal with life appropriately and had the perseverance to keep on track when Stone’s own idiot brother wrongly tried to stop her. Stone guessed he’d be able to work with Reuben. Well, work with him enough to see if Indigo was the woman they both wanted and to test their compatibility at any rate.
The next step would be up to him.
Stone gathered himself and walked through the crowd to stand before Reuben. “Hi. I’m Stone Wishram.”
“It’s obvious you’re a Wishram. Every one of you has black hair and black eyes. I’m Reuben Jenner.”
They shook hands, and Stone said, “I guess my parents only had the one pattern. Five boys, all with identical build and coloring.”
He wondered what he should say next. It seemed rather crass to say, “I want Indigo. Care to share?” but how else was he supposed to open the topic of conversation?
